Fowler leads a “nervous” Scott

Rickie Fowler QLD 595

RICKIE FOWLER leads the 2013 Australian PGA Championship after the first round with Adam Scott living up to all the hype and expectation – and his own initial nervousness – to be just two strokes adrift of the young American.

Fowler shot an 8-under 63 in the morning while Scott went 6-under in the day’s last group to be tied second along with Victorian David McKenzie and Gold Coast local Matthew Ballard.

“I’ll take eight every day and I might have the trophy at the end of the tournament,” said Fowler, who set a new course record at the RACV Royal Pines.

“You shoot 8-under one day and you never know what’s going to happen the next; it’s a new day. I’m looking forward to the challenge tomorrow and getting myself into a good position for Sunday.”

Dealing with all the hype of returning home with the US Masters green jacket, Scott admitted to being very nervous on the first tee in front of the local crowd. He took a few holes to get over feeling and really settled down with birdies on 6, 7 and 8.

“I definitely had the nerves going again on the first tee. I’m pleased to get that out of the way and put a good one on the board,” said Scott, who put on a magnificent driving display.

“I think no matter how little pressure I put on myself I still want to play well especially in front of everyone who’s come out to watch. I want to play well too and give myself a chance to win this week.”

Scott will tee off in the second early Friday and is expected to post a challenging score for Fowler, who will be on course in time for the afternoon TV coverage on One HD.

Speaking of the TV coverage, a big plus to the Network Ten for keeping the coverage going past the scheduled 6pm cut-off so viewers could watch Scott’s round to its conclusion. Mind you, they probably would have been lynched – at least metaphorically on social media – if they had not but it hasn’t stopped such efforts in the past.

It’s great to be able to watch the event in high definition on One and it is a shame the coverage will switch to the standard definition Channel 10 for the final rounds on the weekend.
