SYDNEY’S Jacqui Morgan has defeated seven-time champion Sylvia Donohoe to take the 2012 Australian Women’s Senior Amateur title at the Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club in Canberra.
Morgan survived two close matches in her quarter final and semi-final to get to the final showdown with the experienced Donohoe and put in another strong performance to win 4/2.
Morgan, from the Monash Golf Club in Sydney’s northern beaches faced off against Donahue, from the Narooma Golf Club on the NSW south coast, in near perfect conditions in the nation’s capital on Friday.
Both players birdied the first hole, giving spectators a foretaste of the close battle to come.
Morgan birdied the 4th hole to go 1up, before Donohoe won the 5th hole to bring the match back to square.
Morgan won the 7th and 8th holes to go 2up before Donohoe again fought back to take the next hole and leave Morgan 1up through nine holes. The back nine commenced with Morgan winning holes 11 and 12 to go 3up. Donohoe won the 13th to bring the match back to 2up, before Morgan won the 15th to go back to 3up.
Having only to square the 16th hole, Morgan made par to Donohoe’s bogey to win the title 4/2.
“I feel really honoured to win this title, and relieved to have my name on the trophy alongside the likes of great NSW champions Heather Bleeck, Liz Cavill and Sylvia,” said Morgan after what was her first Australian title win.
It was sweet revenge for the Monash member who lost to Donohoe earlier in the year at the NSW Senior Amateur Championship. Donohoe was looking for her eighth Australian Senior title, but the fairy tale was not to be in 2012.
