2014 Irish Open Preview: Leaderboard

THE Irish Open is one of the flagship events on the European Tour and this year the 59th edition of the event features a high quality field including a swathe of Major winners and tour champions.

Ireland’s quartet of Major Champions – Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy – will lead the home challenge at County Cork’s stunning Fota Island Resort, which is hosting the €2million tournament for the first time in 12 years.

Not that “locals” like McIlroy seem to have a big home advantage.

“I don’t know Fota at all and I’ve never been to Cork, unbelievably,” said the Northern Irishman, who admitted to being disappointed at his US Open performance

“It’s going to be good. Irish Opens are always great events – they are always so well supported and so well attended, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Last year’s Irish Open was the first ever European Tour event to be sold out. That was in Northern Ireland at Royal Portrush, likely venue for the 2019 British Open.

Defending champion this week is England’s Paul Casey while 2004 champion Brett Rumford heads an Australian contingent that includes Richard Green and Wade Ormsby.
