Jeff Maggert wins on Champions Tour debut

Jeff Maggert 595

JEFF MAGGERT has become the 17th player in US Champions Tour history to win in his debut, shooting a 4-under 68 to take the 2014 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.

The three-time US PGA Tour winner hadn’t tasted victory since the 2006 St. Jude’s Classic on the regular tour.

Maggert, who turned 50 in February, finished on 11-under with the help of a decisive 50 foot putt on the 17th.

He beat fellow American Billy Andrade (71), who started the day tied with Fred Funk (75) for the lead.

“I had expectations to play well, but I didn’t know if I would play well enough to win,” Maggert said. “I’d been struggling a little with my game, but everything just kind of came together. It was one of the best tournaments, as far as ball striking, that I’ve had in a few years in any event. That really carried me through.”

Bernhard Langer (68) and Jay Haas (71) tied for the third on 8-under while Peter Senior (74) won’t be too happy with his 3-over finish tied for 53rd.
