2013 SAS Championship Preview: Leaderboard
NICK FALDO can be a polarising figure but you can’t doubt the golfing prowess displayed in the six-time major winner’s 30 year career.
The 56 year old, better known as a television commentator these days, will make his US Champions Tour debut this week at the SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club in North Carolina.
Faldo was not sure how he would go this week but would love to have the competitive juices flowing again come Sunday afternoon and “scare himself” with a good performance.
“That was always the thrill,” Faldo told PGATOUR.COM this week.
“… As you heard me on television, (it’s) how well can you play on Sunday afternoon. The rest of the week doesn’t matter. It’s the fourth quarter, isn’t it? It’s the final set, Sunday afternoon, especially in majors.
“If you can play, that’s the biggest thrill of this game, going out there and feeling really nervous, apprehensive, everything, but you know you can go out and play your heart out, that’s what you’re trying to do. So if we can rekindle that a bit here, it will be fun.”
After some nine years in the television commentary towers the Englishman came out of “retirement” in June to return to the scene of two of his British Open triumphs at Muirfield. He shot an unspectacular 79 and 78.
Faldo will just be concentrating on one hole at a time in Cary.
“I’ve got to string 18 of them together, that’s the real secret,” Faldo said.
Faldo will also be sticking around for the Champion Tour’s Greater Hickory Kia Classic at Rock Barn next week, a tournament just three hours drive away.
After that there is just once more event before the season ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at the TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Bernhard Langer is the defending champion this week while Australia’s representatives are again Peter Senior and Steve Elkington.
Champions Tour TV Coverage
