2013 The Barclays Preview: Leaderboard
AN AWFUL LOT OF MONEY will be thrown about over the next five weeks as the US PGA Tour contests its four-event end of season playoff series.
One hundred and twenty three* of the world’s best golfers start out this week at The Barclays at the Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey and in the end someone walks away with the US$10 million FedEx Cup bonus.
In between there’s lots of other cash for the winners – and also rans – in the individual tournaments, with an US$8 million prize purse available for each event.
After this week the top 100 golfers move on to the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, two weeks later the top 70 meet in Illinois for the BMW Championship and finally just 30 battle out the Tour Championship in Atlanta beginning September 19th.
The way the points system works there are always lots of predictions, maths and computations involved in what might happen but in reality it is all quite simple.
All a contender needs to do is win one of the first three events. That most likely puts them in the top five in the final event. If you are in the top five in the final event just don’t let anyone higher than you in the points table beat you – and you win US$10 million. Simple, like I said.
If you don’t do it that way, you are always relying on other results and, as the US PGA Tour experts like to say, your “destiny is not in your own hands”. And who wants that.
Australia has 10 competitors starting out this week including Adam, Scott, Jason Day, Marc Leishman, Matt Jones, John Senden, Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, Steven Bowditch and Greg Chalmers.
Tiger Woods currently leads the FedEx Cup points table but with 2,500 points available to the winner this week anyone in the top two thirds of the field who wins would overtake him come Sunday.
(* Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson are eligible but not playing this week)
