2013 Principal Charity Classic Preview: Leaderboard

Peter Senior 595 13

THE US CHAMPIONS TOUR has had back to back first time winners in its last two events and all those lovers of mostly meaningless statistics are hoping for a third.

We’re happy to go along with the sentiment on this occasion as either Peter Senior or Steve Elkington could fit the bill when the 2013 Principal Charity Classic is decided this week at the Wakonda Golf Club in Des Moines, Iowa.

Japanese golfer Kohki Idoki really rubbed it in last week when he won the senior tour’s first Major of the year not just at his first attempt but in his first ever visit to US soil.

Mexico’s Estaban Toledo won the Insperity Championship the week before after three previous top tens in his rookie year.

Senior was tied for 11th at the Senior PGA Championship last week and the 53 year old really deserves a break after going so close so many times in what is his fourth Champions Tour season.

Elkington withdrew prior to the championship last week due to a migraine and will hopefully be back to his smooth swinging best.

The fly in the ointment this week is defending champion Jay Hass who has won this event, whilst not at this venue, three times in the last six years.

Other contenders in Iowa include Bernhard Langer, Mark O’Meara, Kirk Triplett, Rocco Mediate and Tom Lehman.
