TIGER WOODS and Rory McIlroy will play together for at least the first two rounds of the 2012 Barclays golf tournament in New York this week and no doubt organisers would be pleased if the pair are still battling it out come Sunday afternoon.
The Barclays is the first leg of the four event FedEx Cup Playoffs and sees the top 125 golfers in the season long points race take on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park.
Woods and McIlroy are at one and three in the standings respectively and in fact in some 50 starts it will be the young Northern Irishman’s first round in an official US PGA Tour event with a golfer who was a boyhood idol.
“I’m looking forward to it,” McIlroy said this week. “I really enjoy his company. I know we’ll have a good time out there.”
Woods too was relishing the challenge: “It’s going to be fun for both of us,” he said. “I enjoy playing with Rory and I hope he feels the same way about being in the same group with me.”
Included in an event with one of the best fields of the year are nine Aussies.
In FedEx Cup ranking order they are Marc Leishman, Adam Scott, John Senden, Aaron Baddeley, Geoff Ogilvy, Greg Chalmers, Robert Allenby, Jason Day and Rod Pampling.
The Playoffs are a knockout style event with the top 100 after this week progressing to the Deutsche Bank Championship, the top 70 playing off in the BMW Championship and then the top 30 fighting it out for the US $10 million prize for the lone winner at the end.
Of course there is lots of money available throughout the series, particularly if you win any of the events, but they even throw money at the 25 golfers who will be bowing out on Sunday evening local time.
To make it even more interesting, the structure of the points table for the finals is now such that it is mathematically possible that someone currently last on the points list could win the overall series.
The 2012 Barclays is being telecast live in Australia on Fox Sports beginning Friday 4am – 8am.
