The Northern Territory will welcome the PGA Tour of Australasia for the first time with a brand new tournament this year.
Just launched, the Palmerston Golf Course will host the Northern Territory PGA Championship from 11-14 August 2016.
“I am delighted to announce the Northern Territory PGA Championship as the newest tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia,” said Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA of Australia which oversees the PGA Tour of Australasia.
“The PGA is committed to expanding the footprint of Professional golf across Australia and expose sports fans to the great game of golf in their own backyard.”
Nathan Barrett, NT Minister for Sport and Recreation, said the championship will be the first PGA Tour of Australasia event ever held in the Northern Territory and that is wonderful news for local golfers.
“We are expecting golfers from across Australia, New Zealand and Asia in Darwin for the event and that will provide international exposure for the Northern Territory and great financial returns for the Darwin hospitality industry.”
The tournament will be played for a prize purse of $150,000, attract Official World Golf Ranking points and provide the champion with a full exemption onto the PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2017 season.
“Tournaments like the Northern Territory PGA Championship are incredibly important to the ongoing success of Australian golf on the world stage,” added Thorburn.
“They provide the rising stars of Aussie golf with the opportunity to hone their craft. Some of the our best players including PGA TOUR winners Steven Bowditch and Marc Leishman began their careers competing in tournaments like this.”
The Northern Territory PGA Championship will be the highlight on the golfing schedule in the Territory, which enjoys a healthy golf scene including a strong junior golf program.”
“While the tournament will bring the PGA Tour of Australasia to the Territory for the week, it is planned that it will continue to grow the game in the area,” added Thorburn.
“There will be plenty of opportunities for the local community to become involved in the tournament via volunteering to work on the event or through the golf clinics on offer throughout the week.”
“The Northern Territory PGA Championship will be a festival of golf and we look forward to working with the State Government and Palmerston Golf Course on a successful first tournament and setting a benchmark for a long and successful future.”
The Northern Territory PGA Championship sees the PGA Tour of Australasia schedule contain 14 tournaments in 2016 played across five countries.
The picturesque Palmerston Golf Club is on the southern outskirts of Darwin city will be familiar to the many veteran golfers who played there during the 2015 Australian Veteran Golfers Union National Championships.
August is a great time in the Top End, with low humidity and the daily temperature seemingly stuck on 30 degrees C. I think we saw just one wayward cloud there in over a week visiting as part of the national championships. Its a fascinating city and area to visit, with top tourist drawcards like Darwin Harbour, and just over an hour away, billabongs full of all those very friendly crocodiles the NT is famous for.
