ONCE again pay TV subscribers will have blanket coverage of the 2015 British Open at St Andrews while all those searching for Australian free to air coverage of the 144th staging of one of the world’s great sporting events come up empty.
The US Masters is the only golf major still available free to air in Australia and that situation is unlikely to change any time soon. [See this previous story for an explanation https://australianseniorgolfer.com.au/3650/2012-british-open-golf-television-coverage/]
As for the Fox Sports coverage, it couldn’t be more comprehensive. It begins Thursday at 6pm and continues unabated for 11 hours till 5am. It’s the same for the second round on Friday and then with slightly later start times on the weekend.
As usual, it should be a fascinating event even though defending champion Rory McIlroy is out with an ankle injury.
All eyes will be on Jordan Spieth as he challenges for his third straight major. The 21 year old Texan couldn’t be more confident after just winning the John Deere classic in a playoff, his fourth win of the season.
Rickie Fowler will further excite American interests with his win at the Scottish Open and there are a host of other big name contenders.
The Australians will have their biggest contingent in seven years with 15 Aussie golfers taking to the fairways at the home of golf.
The Aussie squad includes Jason Day, now hopefully over the vertigo that halted his recent US Open challenge, former runner-up Adam Scott (pictured), Scottish Open performer John Senden, Marc Leishman, Geoff Ogilvy, Marcus Fraser, Brett Rumford, Steven Bowditch, Greg Chalmers, Matt Jones, Adam Bland, Scott Strange, Rod Pampling, Scott Hend and Scott Arnold.
