PETER SENIOR has recorded his best finish on the 2015 US Champions Tour with his first top ten of the season at the Principal Charity Classic in Iowa.
The 55 year old Aussie golfer shot a final round 2-under 70 to finish the tournament ton 8-under, four strokes behind winner Mark Calcavecchia.
Senior has had two previous T17 finishes in his seven starts on the over 50’s tour this year, including the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago.
The Queenslander is playing in his sixth season on the Champions Tour but this year has limited status.
He had just two top tens in 22 starts last year, the first season he returned home without multiple top three finishes.
As for the 1989 British Open winning Calcavecchia, things were looking good.
Wearing bacon-themed pants and using a putter he bought on impulse at a local Iowa sporting goods store, the American was delighted with his third Champions Tour victory.
Using that store-bought putter, he closed with a 3-under 69 to finish on 12-under, one stroke better than Joe Durant and Brian Henninger.
“It’s kind of out of nowhere. I’m kind of in a little state of shock right now,” the 13 time US PGA Tour winner said.
It was Calcavecchia’s first win since a gruesome injury to his right hand last November that left him wondering if his career was finished.
“It still bothers me. I wake up and these fingers hurt,” Calcavecchia said. “But I get out there and start playing. … I kind of get over the pain and forget about it.”
This week the Champions Tour plays its third major of the year, with the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship taking place at the Belmont Country Club in Boston.
