THE crystal clear waters of the Pacific Ocean will form the backdrop for this year’s South Pacific Open Championship at Tina Golf Course in New Caledonia, with official tournament dates announced today for September 30th – October 3rd and a prize purse of AUD$150,000 on offer.
The PGA Tour of Australasia is aiming to expand the field from 90 to 100 Professionals who will play alongside 20 amateurs, including two elite amateurs nominated by Golf Australia, two nominated by New Zealand Golf and one nominated by Golf Queensland.
Last year’s tournament boasted one of the best fields in recent history and provided golf fans in New Caledonia with the opportunity to see some of the best golfers from the pacific regions in action, including 2011 champion Matthew Griffin and 2014 Fiji International winner, Steve Jeffress.
The tournament, now in its fifth year, was originally run as a pro-am by the Tina Golf Club as part of the New South Wales pro-am calendar before becoming part of the PGA Tour of Australasia schedule in 2011 with a smaller prize purse of AUD$110,000.
The winner of the South Pacific Open Championship will receive Official World Golf Ranking Points and a two-year exemption into PGA Tour of Australasia tournaments, where approximately of AUD$7.5million is played for each year.
