2015 The Players Championship Preview: Leaderboard

JASON DAY will be the unlikely elder statesman when he lines up alongside world No.1 Rory McIlroy and No.2 Jordan Spieth in the opening rounds of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass this week.

The 27 year old Aussie, McIlroy, who turned 26 this week, and 21 year old Spieth have all won this year, but Day is the only one in the group yet to win a major.

“I have a great pairing. It’s good to be in a group like that as it shows you are one of those guys and it shows the work that I have been doing is paying off and that’s special,” Day said.

“I want to do what they’ve done, of course I want to do that. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want what they’ve got.

“But when they and others win I just get fired up that I didn’t give myself an opportunity to win.

“It annoys me and it’s frustrating when I am not in contention so hopefully I can fix that this week.”

The 2004 champion Adam Scott is also in a featured group and will play alongside defending champion Martin Kaymer and two-time winner Tiger Woods.

Woods hasn’t played since he surprisingly finished 17th at the US Masters last month. He’s had a less than ideal preparation, coming off a rough weekend that saw the anniversary of his father’s death and the break up with partner Lindsey Vonn.

The other Aussies taking on the famed Sawgrass course (and its iconic 17th island green) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, are are Robert Allenby, Aaron Baddeley, Steven Bowditch, Matt Jones, Marc Leishman, Geoff Ogilvy and John Senden.
