STEVEN BOWDITCH defends his debut US PGA Tour title at the Texas Valero Open at the TPC San Antonio this week and is hoping the spotlight spurs a surge in form.

The 31 year old Aussie was ecstatic to win the title last year but things have been a little meagre since then.

He’s drawing on the example of America’s Matt Every, who was in a very similar position form wise last week before coming home down the stretch Sunday to successfully defend his Arnold Palmer Invitational crown.

“Seeing Matt win last week gave me some good energy and confidence. It’s great to see it is possible,” Bowditch told AAP during the week.

“He was able to get it done on a golf course that suits him and hopefully I can go out here, on this course I enjoy, and give myself a really good shot at being in contention on Sunday and doing it all again.”

With the US Masters just two tournaments away he is also in the same position as last year that he basically needs a win to get his second start at Augusta National. (On debut last year he finished a very creditable 26th).

There’s quite a good field in San Antonio this week with many Masters starters, like three-time winner Phil Mickelson, looking to hone their games before the big event, and others, like Bowditch, hoping to be catapulted into the field.

Other contenders this week include Jordan Spieth, Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, FedEx Cup leader Jimmy Walker and Jason Dufner.

Aussies joining Bowditch include last week’s third placegetter Matt Jones, Robert Allenby, Aaron Baddeley, Jarrod Lyle, Geoff Ogilvy and John Senden.
