Larry Canning is looking forward to heading out to a new Australian PGA Legends Tour Pro-Am circuit in south western NSW. He’s urging amateur golfers to join in for what should be a brilliant week.
I USED used to love packing the car with my clubs, luggage and hopefully enough humility to fit in with the locals, so I could head out west to the NSW Country Pro-Am circuit. The courses are always way better than most people think and the drive really interesting and different. But it’s the people who make it such a great trip … they are the absolute salt of the Earth.
In fact as you enter towns like Cootamundra you can almost taste the salt in the air! Well look out folks, here we come again. Thanks to lots of work and commitment from the locals at Tumut, Cootamundra and West Wyalong Golf Clubs the Australian PGA Legends Tour will be heading there towards the end of May.
The South West Legends Tour Circuit begins on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th May at Tumut Golf Club, then travels to Cootamundra on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th and winds up on Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st at West Wyalong Golf Club.
Graeme Cheshire himself a PGA Legends Tour Player, has run the Pro-Shop at Cootamundra Golf Club for many years and is driver behind the wheel of the NSW West Leg of the Legends Tour.
“It’s been over twenty years since we hosted the pros out here in the west” Graeme told me. “The improvements we, and the other courses have made since then, are unbelievable”
President and 30 year member at West Wyalong, Phil Kimber told me the members of the club are really excited to host the Legends Tour players and would like to show off the condition of their course. “Since we put the new watering system in the course looks magnificent. Last time we had a Pro-Am it was dry but now we’ve been able to improve the condition and the layout significantly”
Helen Pearce is the Lady President at Tumut Golf Club and one of the Tournament Coordinators of their Pro-Am. “We are very proud of our course and are really looking forward to having the Legends Tour players back here after such a long time. We are dedicating our tournament to the late Jerry Stolhand who was our Professional all those years ago and used to arrange for the Senior Pro’s to play at Tumut Golf Course”
It’s no secret I love a hearing stories, yarns and even folklores from anyone who wants to buy me a beer and in this part of NSW, that’s exactly what I expect. I also love a good golf course and from what I’m hearing, Cootamundra, Tumut and West Wyalong are even better than they were twenty years ago. And they were pretty handy back then.
Former Australian Open Champion, multiple European Tour winner and real Aussie Legend, Rodger Davis will be heading up the field for the three events but he won’t have it all his own way with a bunch of other great players aiming to take down him down.
It would be a fantastic way to play on some top tracks, have a beer with some true Aussie Legends of Golf and share a yarn with some local characters. The amateur fields still have spots left and welcome any visitors who would like to have a terrific few days.
Accommodation packages are available through all the clubs so go on the following websites, get your mates together and get yourselves down there!… Trust me, it will be a brilliant week!
