Woods and Allenby front up to Phoenix “super bowl”

2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open Preview: Leaderboard

TIGER WOODS and Robert Allenby were two golfers attracting plenty of attention ahead of the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open this week.

The two golfers will face one of golf’s biggest and most raucous crowds at the TPC Scottsdale in Arizona and each will have their obvious challenges –  Woods because he is back after another extended injury break from the US PGA Tour and Allenby facing the golfing public for the first time since the extensively-publicised incident in Hawaii.

Allenby was sticking by his original abducted and bashed story when he fronted the media on Tuesday (see video).

Whatever the truth of the situation, he will be facing tens of thousands of golf fans seated in the venue’s notorious par-3 16th Stadium Hole and there will no doubt be lots of comments and suggestions from the crowd.

Allenby wasn’t too fussed with the comparatively tiny “Party  Hole” at the Australian Golf Club during an Australian Open a few years back and took public offence at some comments he took to be personal.

The Saturday attendance record for the Phoenix Open was set last year at 189,722 and that figure is expected to be smashed this week because the US Super Bowl NFL football final is on just down the road on Sunday and sports fans have been swarming to the area.

Woods is playing his first tournament since his own hosted event in December and his first TOUR event since August. There’s much debate on how well he will fare.

Among the contenders are three-time champion Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, Brendan Steele and Australian Open winner Jordan Spieth. The defending champion is Kevin Stadler.

Aussies lining up alongside Allenby include Matt Jones, Steven Bowditch, Aaron Baddeley Geoff Ogilvy.

Web.Com & LPGA events

The 2015 Web.Com Tour kicks of this week with 15 Aussie golfers competing at the Panama Claro Championship at the Panama Golf Club in Panama City.

The LPGA also gets underway for 2015 with the Coates Golf Championship in Florida.
