THE US PGA Tour is back on the mainland this week for the pro-am formatted Humana Challenge at the PGA West facility in California.
The tournament will see the first outing of the year for the ever popular Phil Mickelson – and a number of other notables – but won’t see Robert Allenby, who has decided on some further recuperation after all the drama in Hawaii last week.
The Humana Challenge – once the Bob Hope Classic and now with former President Bill Clinton and his foundation stepping into that “celebrity” breach – is played over three courses for the first three rounds (PGA West Palmer, PGA West Nicklaus and the La Quinta Country Club) and then just PGA West for the final round Sunday.
The defending champion is the not so popular Patrick Reed with other leading contenders including Matt Kuchar, Bill Haas, Ryan Palmer, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson.
Stuart Appleby, showing form with his 4-under 66 in the final round of the Sony Open in Hawaii last week to finish tied 17th along with Jason Day and others, leads an Aussie contingent that also includes Matt Jones, Steve Bowditch, Cameron Percy and the inspirational Jarrod Lyle.
