TERRY PRICE has claimed his biggest win of the year with a dramatic playoff victory at the NSW/ACT Senior PGA Championship at the Mollymook Golf Club.
Price fired back to back rounds of 2-under 70 at the famed Hilltop Course to tie former champion Michael Harwood, who birdied his final hole in regulation to force a playoff in the 36 hole event.
Harwood closed with a three-under-par 69 and was hopeful of claiming his second NSW Senior PGA title after he won the championship at Oatlands Golf Club in 2009.
In front of an anxious crowd, the playoff took only one hole to decide the champion.
Both players came up short on the difficult par-three ninth hole leaving short pitches to set up a par saving putt.
It was Price who got the better of the usually steady Harwood, who ran his chip eight-feet past the cup, while Price left himself a straight forward three-foot uphill putt for par.
When Harwood missed his putt, Price calmly rolled in his putt to claim the title.
Price said he was delighted to take the title and praised the Mollymook course on the NSW south coast.
“The golf course is just sensational and really was a wonderful test of golf for all legends professionals,” Price said. “It really makes you think about every shot and provides such a unique golfing experience.”
Harwood was again left to rue a lost opportunity, after also recently losing a playoff for the Australian Senior PGA Championship against Kiwi golfer Simon Owen at the Richmond Golf Club in western Sydney.
Round one leader Noel Ratcliffe could not continue his hot form on the final day, closing with a 3-over par 75 to finish in a tie for third at even-par with fellow New South Welshman Steven Aisbett (71-73.)
