NSW golfer Brian Sams has won the 2014 Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Match Play Championship after defeating Victoria’s Barry Tippett at the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club.

The match began in perfect conditions with Tippett taking an early lead going 2up though four holes.

With the wind picking up Sams fought back to lead the match 1up through 8, however Tippett once again rallied to win holes 11, 12 and 14 to regain the lead and move to 2up.

The finals holes were a see-sawing event with the match coming down to the 18th hole with Sams requiring a 14ft putt to take the championship. He missed, sending the pair to a 19th hole.

Tippett put his second shot behind a tree, which eventually cost him the match when Sams dropped a four foot putt for par and a 1UP championship victory.

It was a fitting result for Sams, who finally won the Australian title he has been chasing for some years. Sams has been one of Australia’s best senior golfers, winning eleven senior ranking events and represented Australia on many occasions. However, a national title had long eluded him.

In the play off for third West Australian John Banting overcame Queenslander Peter King 2&1 in a close match.
