With the US PGA Tour back on this week (yes, the 2014/2015 season has started already) it got Larry Canning wondering about the tour’s FedEx Cup format, and particularly how it might be improved.

HOW much money is too much? Well whatever Rory McIlroy has tucked away in the County Down National Bank and Phil Mickelson probably has sitting on evens at the local casino would be pretty close.
While normal people with mortgages, kids at Uni or electricity bills which look like a Stephen King novel are sitting on the end of their lounges pondering the thought of a putt worth 10 million in cold hard cabbage, Rory is telling a room full of Journo’s: “It’s not about the money”. And Philby is withdrawing from the same tournament half way through, citing the need to practice for the upcoming, play for absolutely nothing, Ryder Cup.
This puts the FedEx Cup in the category of “Quandary” for me. On one hand I enjoy seeing someone, whose life will be changed forever, facing drives over water, greens surrounded with barb wire type rough, going down the stretch with an insane amount of loot on the line. But on the other, I can’t stand watching a very rich guy become even richer when clearly he would swap that 10 mill for a Green Jacket or an Old Claret jug.
The FedEx Cup has been criticised by pretty well everyone who has the ability to criticise but I am yet to hear some ideas on how the excecs at FedEx could utilise their cash on the PGA Tour to better effect.
Should we have a fifth major like the girls? Is it purely money that determines what should be a major? God knows, we don’t need another major Championship with the letters US on the front… surely!?
So what is the solution… that’s in case we all agree we need a solution?
I would love to start up a chat group with our followers on Australian Senior Golfer and maybe, just maybe, we could change the golf world forever. Or perhaps just have a bloody good debate.
