AUSTRALIA’S Peter Fowler was just one shot off the lead after the first round of the Senior Players Championship in Pittsburgh.
Fowler shot a 5-under 65 to share second place behind Americans Joe Durant and Doug Garwood and South Africa’s David Frost.
On a crowded leaderboard Fowler was joined by seven others including Bernhardt Langer, Corey Pavin, Olin Browne, Steve Pate and Larry Pize.
The Senior Players Championship at the historic Fox Chapel Golf Club is the second senior major Fowler has played this year. He missed the cut at the Senior PGA Championship this year and finished T35 at last year’s US Senior Open.
Fowler opened the championship with a bogie but then peeled off six birdies, with four of them on the last seven holes.
The other Aussie in the field this week is Peter Senior, who is on even after also opening with a bogie that was offset by a birdie on the par three 6th.
