HENRIK STENSON has been the quiet achiever of world golf this year but after a resounding victory in the second US PGA Tour Playoff event that is no more.
The 37-year-old Swede is now the leader at the midway point in the FedExCup Playoffs and is assured of a spot in the TOUR Championship and a chance to win golf’s biggest prize.
Stenson has been flying under the radar somewhat despite impressive performances of late including his second at the British Open, third at the US PGA Championship, third at the Scottish Open and a tie for second at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational.
“I’m pleased to have won. It was a big goal of mine to win a golf tournament after all those nice finishes so to do it I am very pleased,” said Stenson after what was his third PGA Tour win after a lean period since 2009.
“I have been playing nicely for a long time and this week was no exception. I hit a lot of fairways and greens and the putter was hanging in there.”
Stenson shot a final round 5-under 66 at a rain-soaked TPC Boston to win the 2013 Deutsche Bank Championship at 22-under.
He was two strokes clear of second placed Steve Stricker (67) with Canadian Graham DeLaet (69) third at 18-under.
Australia’s best was Jason Day (69) tied for 13th on 14-under with Marc Leishman (70) a stroke back on 13-under.
Leishman jumped from 76th in the FedEx standings to 58th to make it into the 70 golfer field for the third playoff event, The BMW Championship in two weeks.
Also still alive in the playoffs are Adam Scott (-6, T53), who was bumped to third in the standings after Stenson replaced Tiger Woods in the top spot, Day (12th) and Matt Jones (51st), in despite missing the cut in Boston.
Stuart Appleby (-3, T66) and Greg Chalmers (cut) finished in the 90’s in the standings and won’t be travelling to Illinois for the next playoff event.
