ROCCO MEDIATE has his second US Champions Tour victory after a runaway win at the inaugural 2013 Shaw Charity Classic in Canada.
The irrepressible Mediate has had just 17 starts in his first senior season and closed with a 7-under 64 at the Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club in Calgary for a seven stroke victory.
Mediate sprinted to the lead with opening rounds of 63 and 64 and went into the final round with a two stroke advantage.
The six-time PGA Tour winner finished at 22-under to tie the tour record for lowest total score in a 54-hole event.
”I liked it when I saw it,” Mediate said of the Canyon Meadows course. ”It’s just that you’ve got to drive real straight. I like that feeling, not that I drove straight all the time, but most of the time I did. You can’t do anything if you don’t drive straight.”
Fellow American Tom Byrum (64) finished second on 15-under with Duffy Waldorf (65) and Kirk Triplett (67) tied for third at 14 under.
Australia’s Peter Senior (66) finished on 10-under tied for 19th while Steve Elkington (68) was well back on 2-under.
The Champions Tour will stay in Canada this week but moves from the west to Quebec for the 2013 Montreal Championship, where Mark Calcavecchia is the defending champion.
