SIX-TIME major champion Nick Faldo is set to make his first Champions Tour start on US soil at the SAS Championship at the Prestonwood Country Club in North Carolina in October.
It will be Faldo’s first Champions Tour entry besides two appearances at the co-sanctioned 2013 Senior British Open Championship.
“I’m curious,” said Faldo explaining why he is starting his Champions Tour career as a 56 year old. “I enjoyed the process of training for the Open Championship and was happy with my effort after limited training. This is the first time I’ve entertained thoughts of committing myself and playing again. I look forward to the preparation and testing my competitive skills again.
Faldo, now better known as a CBS golf commentator, split his major championships between the Masters (1989, 1990, and 1996) and The Open Championship (1987, 1990, and 1992). He was a 1997 inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame and for his contributions and service to golf received a knighthood in 2009. He is the only living British golfer to receive such an honor.
Shaw Charity Classic
The tour this weekend is in Alberta, Canada for one of the three new events of 2013, the Shaw Charity Classic at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club.
This is the third time the tour has been in the Calgary area but it hasn’t visited in 15 years. The field includes five World Golf Hall of Fame members – Hale Irwin, Fred Couples, Nick Price, Tom Kite and Sandy Lyle. The 81 players scheduled to participate have combined for more than 370 US PGA TOUR wins, including 16 major championships.
