THE US CHAMPIONS TOUR has its first full field event of 2013 this weekend with The Allianz Championship kicking off the year for reigning Australian Open winner Peter Senior.
Senior, who was runner up in this event last year after losing a play-off with defending champion Corey Pavin, will have some company this year in his quest to win his first Champions Tour title in fellow Aussie and Major winner Steve Elkington.
Elkington had his first appearance on the lucrative US over 50’s circuit a couple of weeks back in the limited field Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii. He finished tied for ninth in a very creditable opening performance.
Also new to the Champions Tour this year are the irrepressible Rocco Mediate (Rocco has turned 50: Champions Tour Beware ), fellow US PGA Tour winner Bart Bryant and Taiwan’s Chie-Hsiang Lin, a product of last year’s end of season Champions Tour National Qualifying Tournament.
From this opening full field event, the Champions Tour winds its way to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on November 3.
There is also the season long Charles Schwab Cup, won last year by Tom Lehman, the first back to back winner.
Cup runner up Bernhard Langer is also likely to be a major player this year along with the likes of Fred Couples, John Cook, Mark Calcavecchia, Russ Cochran and Kenny Perry.
