AN ankle injured while mucking around playing soccer could see world No.1 Rory McIlroy miss the opportunity to defend his British Open title at St Andrews next week.
McIlroy posted a photo on Instagram this week showing him on crutches with a walking boot on his left ankle.
He said there was a “total rupture” of an ankle ligament and the joint capsule sustained while kicking around a soccer ball with friends in his native Northern Ireland.
Rory was running down the field Saturday when it happened. His left ankle snagged and rolled over and that is what ruptured the ligament according to his representative.
“Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day,” McIlroy wrote on his post. “Rehab already started….. Working hard to get back as soon as I can.”
