VETERAN Tom Watson showed a lot of younger golfers a clean pair of heels with a 4-under 66 in the first round of the US Senior Open in California.
The 65 year old Watson found the traditionally set up Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento to his liking and led the field in the senior tour’s fourth major of the year by a stroke atop a crowded leaderboard.
Australia’s Peter Fowler, coming off back to back victories on the European Senior, got to within a stroke with half a dozen to go but two late dropped shots saw him finish with a 1-under 69.
He was joined on that mark by compatriot Peter Senior, with Kiwi Grant Waite, also on 69, the only other Australasian in the field.
