European Tour: Hong Kong Open and World Match Play Championship

THE European Tour has two events on this week, the Hong Kong Open at the Hong Kong Golf Club and the World Match Play Championship in England.

There are no Aussies involved at the Matchplay at the London Golf Club in Kent but quite a few are teeing up at the Hong Kong Open, particularly as the event is co-sanctiond with the Asian Tour.

With the Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda also on this week the World Match Play Championship field has suffered somewhat.

It does boast five European Ryder Cup squad members though in Henrik Stenson, Graeme McDowell, Victor Dubuisson, Jamie Donaldson and Stephen Gallacher.

The only American taking part is the ever popular (cough) Patrick Reed.

The event has undergone a number of changes over the years and now involves a format of sixteen players playing in four groups of four. Each player plays the others in his group before the winner and runner-up get through to the quarter finals on Saturday and then semi and final matches on Sunday.

The Hong Kong Open field includes four time winner Miguel Angel Jimenez, Ernie Els, Nicolas Colsaerts and Gregory Bourdy as well as Aussies Marcus Fraser – back after a long injury layoff – Wade Ormsby, Brett Rumford, Cameron Smith, Matt Griffin and Scott Hend, amongst others.
