GOLF visitor numbers to the Gold Coast are set to rise with Go Golfing Travel, Australia’s biggest golf tourism and event company, Gold Coast Tourism and the Gold Coast’s premier golf resorts and courses launching a number of initiatives to attract golfers from interstate and Asia.

Seven of Asia’s most respected golf travel writers recently enjoyed a hosted week of golf, sightseeing and activities on the Gold Coast, staying at Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise, InterContinetal Sanctuary Cove Resort and RACV Royal Pines. Media members visited from Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.

Spencer Robinson, managing editor of Asian Golf Magazine, was most impressed with the Gold Coast’s golf and attractions. “Having a gallery of kangaroos while playing at Sanctuary Cove Golf & Country Club was a highlight. The Gold Coast has a great climate and the ease of travel to the courses is a bonus. Australian Outback Spectacular was a super show. I am sure Asian golfers would delight in what the Gold Coast has to offer.”

Closer to home, a 12 month online campaign targeting interstate golfers was launched in June, with value driven golf holiday packages particularly showcased.

Go Golfing Travel will be hosting a dedicated web page featuring the golf holiday packages with links to major stakeholders RACV Royal Pines Resort, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort and Mercure Gold Coast. Broadbeach apartments are also represented through Bel Air on Broadbeach, The Breakers Absolute Beachfront Apartments, Mantra Broadbeach on the Park and Sierra Grand.

Gold Coast golf campaign manager, Peter McCarthy, is delighted that the Gold Coast’s resorts and courses have banded together to drive golf visitors. “Golfers are a high yielding market staying an average of five nights and spending upwards of $300 per day. Part of the Gold Coast’s attraction for golfers is that we have 10 world-class golf resorts within a 30 minute radius. So it makes sense that the golf courses and tourism stakeholders are working together to promote the destination domestically and internationally.”

The recent announcement of RACV Royal Pines Resort as the new home for the Australian PGA for the next 5 years is another coup for the Gold Coast. US Masters champion Adam Scott and a host of top players from Australia and overseas will contest the 4 day tournament that runs 7 to 10 November this year.

RACV Royal Pines is also home to the Australian Ladies Masters, where Karrie Webb has won a record 8 times.
