THAT golf is often seen to reflect life is hardly a new thought, as the author of this charming new book readily admits.
“GOLF, a course in LIFE” is written not by a pro or even scratch golfer or teacher but by John Hanlon, an Australian writer and musician with an obvious love of the game.
What Hanlon has attempted to do here is extend the metaphor that golf reflects life, “to examine it in depth and apply it to both the mental and physical sides of golf, as well as the business and personal sides of our everyday lives.”
It is neatly and simply structured with a series of sometimes well-worn golf advice/topics on the left page with Hanlon’s life metaphors on the opposing page.
There’s actually lots of good golfing advice that players of all levels need to remember/ reflect on at times, and what that might teach us about life and business.
Obvious metaphors such as keep your eye on the ball, be a good loser, play to your strengths, learn from your mistakes, and numerous more are covered with humour and insight.
Many, such as the simple “Use a lighter grip”, might not only make you think how maybe you actually did tightened up during that important round last Saturday, but how such modest concepts really can relate to life, business and relationships in innovative ways.
As Hanlon says in his preface: “I’m well aware some will consider my view of the world to be anachronistic, naïve and idealistic and, I admit, in some ways I doggedly cling to what many regard as old-fashioned values.
“However, I make no apologies for this. I have little time for cynics or so-called realists who abandon tradition in the name of progress or decry idealism as weakness. Cynicism is a close relative of apathy in my view and a man without ideals is a man without a soul.”
