DEFENDING CHAMPION John Ciezki was on track to make it three in a row after the opening round of the 2014 Australian Veteran Golfers Union National Championship in Western Australia on Tuesday.
Ciezki shot a three over 75 at the Capel Golf Club to lead the 54 hole stroke championship.
“That’s a good start,” the 62 year old Victorian golfer said. “I was struggling a bit off the tee but I’m happy.”
Ciezki, from the Buninyong Golf Club near Ballarat, won the championship in 2012 when it was conducted in his home state on courses in the Mornington Peninsula area and followed it up with a victory in Canberra last year.
Ciezki was obviously feeling reasonably confident but wasn’t getting ahead of himself.
“We’ll see what the golfing gods bring,” he said.
The AVGU National Championship is an annual event that rotates around the states and territories. It is held over three handicapped grades with gross and nett champions rewarded.
Some 384 golfers and 90 non playing partners have gathered in the south western region of WA for the event this year with play conducted at Capel as well as Bunbury Golf Club, Busselton Golf Club and the Sanctuary Golf Resort. Lady partners also play a stableford championship.
