Denis Dale over arch rival in senior match play

Denis Dale (left) and Rick Oliver

Denis Dale (pictured left) has beaten arch rival Rick Oliver to take out the 2008 Australian Men’s Senior Golf Match Play Championship at Barwon Heads.

The two NSW golfers have had some epic battles over the years and a show down between the two top seeds had loomed all week as 32 entrants battled each other as well as some uncertain weather conditions.

Oliver and Dale finished one two in that order in this year’s Men’s Senior Amateur Australian Order of Merit and Dale was delighted to reverse the tables.

In perfect conditions today, he won 6/4 on the 14th hole in a match many expected would go right down to the wire. Dale played excellent, golf missing just one green in regulation and was one under the card when the match concluded.

Oliver played solidly but narrowly missed a few vital putts on the tricky Barwon Heads greens.

The photo below of the outcome of their first two tee shots shows just how evenly matched they are.

Seeded one and two respectively, Oliver and Dale both won tightly contested semi-finals 2/1. Oliver had a close tussle with John Beaumont (SA) with the match all square after 13 hole whilst Dale established an early advantage over Norm Way (Qld) but was only 1 up after 15 holes.

Turning Golf Pro at 48

Turning Golf Pro at 48

Gary WolstenholmePROVING it’s never too late, English amateur golfer Gary Wolstenholme has decided to turn pro at the ripe old age of 48.

Wolstenholme, one of the world’s best known and most successful amateurs, gained further notoriety earlier this year when he was called in as first alternate for the U.S. Open.

Much was made of the fact that while some of his fellow competitors were swanning around in their private jets, the cash strapped and acknowledged quirky Englishman was found dining on the free sandwiches in the locker room because he couldn’t afford to eat out.

Wolstenholme is England’s most capped amateur and also famously beat Tiger Woods in the 1995 Walker Cup.

he revelled in the irritation he caused to young opponents, who would berate themselves for being outplayed by an old man who was so short off the tee

“I have been thinking about turning pro when I get to 50 for some time,” Wolstenholme said this week. “And then I thought to myself, ‘There is not much more to do.’ I have won 218 caps for England, won the Amateur Championship twice, as well as more than 70 tournaments on all five continents.

“I was 48 last month and I suddenly thought, ‘I am not preparing myself properly for when I am 50. My golf is not improving. Why don’t I turn pro now?’ And so I did.”

Wolstenholme has entered the first stage of the European Tour qualifying school in Scotland and has already received an invitation to the Kazakhstan Open on the Challenge Tour and hopes he might then play on the main circuit at the Portugal Masters next month.

Wolstenholme is trying to sell his house to raise some operating expenses and is back living with his mother in Lancashire to save money.

“It’s a little bit frightening because it’s a massive change, but it’s also hugely exciting,” he said.

Wolstenholme is know for his personal foibles and talkativeness -he travels with his own pillow and listens attentively to his biorhythms.

According to the TimesOnline he is also known for being one of the shortest hitters to reach the top of the amateur game.

“To compensate, he developed exceptional accuracy and a devastating short game to go with good mid-iron play. In addition - and this is not an insignificant attribute - he has always risen to the occasion. He loved the limelight, even when he was being outdriven, and at matchplay he revelled in the irritation he caused to young opponents, who would berate themselves for being outplayed by an old man who was so short off the tee,” the TimesOnline said

Strong Aussie team for Senior Asia Pacific golf championship

The strong six man Australian team chosen to compete in the 2008 Asia-Pacific Senior Golf Championship in Malaysia in November is hoping to go one better after previous national teams finished second in the last two championships.

The Australian team includes Rick Oliver (NSW), Denis Dale (NSW), Ross Percy (VIC), Brian Sams (NSW), Nigel Goodall (WA) and Stefan Albinski (NSW).

Oliver and Dale are current winner and runner-up respectively of the recently completed Australian Senior Order of Merit and the rest of the team have been in winning form at various events throughout the year.

In his first year of eligibility for AUSOOM events (Aged 55+), Sydney’s Stefan Albinski has had a major impact and is the current Australian Senior Amateur Golf Championship winner.

Albinski also won the 2008 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship and the North Sydney Seniors Championship in June and recently tested his skills in trying conditions at the 2008 British Senior Open Amateur Championship.

The Asia Pacific Senior Golf Championship will be played over 54 holes at the Karambunai Golf Resort, Sabah, Malaysia from November 11-13, 2008.

Greg Norman to take on old nemesis Augusta National

Greg Norman to take on old nemesis Augusta National

Australian veteran golfer Greg Norman is odds on to return to the scene of the crime and resume his troubled relationship with the US Masters in April next year.

Norman qualified for Augusta National when he turned back the clock to finish tied third at the British Open last month.

But he turned down an invitation to this year’s final major, the US PGA Championship next week, and had kept tight lipped about Augusta.

But lining up for the US Senior Open in Colorado Springs this week and with the competitive juices flowing, he said: “I feel great that I’ve played my way into Augusta….so I can look forward to that come April, play myself into [shape].”

Settling in to married life with new bride Chris Evert, Norman must feel confident about taking on the old dear again.

He will be forever remembered for his infamous final-round meltdown in 1996 when he blew a six-stroke lead to finish second behind his long-time nemesis Nick Faldo.

Norman, having played the British Open, Senior British Open and now in the midst of the US Senior Open, says he has realised this month that his competitive nature is as strong as ever.

“I have been disappointed in my two finishes the past two weeks, which is a very good sign,” he said.

“It’s is one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make in golf, turning down the PGA,” the 53 year old said.

Meanwhile, Norman has confirmed he will play in the Johnnie Walker Classic at The Vines course in Perth next February.

Tiger Woods for Australian Open?

But Norman won’t be a starter at the Australian Open at Royal Sydney this year because of a clash with his own event, the Shark Shootout in the US.

However, he will remain in the sights of Golf Australia, with the big announcement this week that the Aussie Open will remain in Sydney till 2015.

Golf Australia has already begun moves to lure a number of internationals - including  Rocco Mediate, Mike Weir and Retief Goosen - to join the likes of Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and defending champion Craig Parry to the event this year.
Golf Australia’s tournament boss Trever Herden said that while several of the world’s leading players would be approached to play this year, even Tiger Woods remained a possibility in the future despite a $4 million appearance fee.
“Tiger cannot play this year because of his injury but I’m sure he’d love to return to Australia and play the Open,” Herden said.
“We now have substantial backing and we are seeing the Open as an investment so it’s not out of the question we would invite him to play.
“We will now be chasing players like Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia  and Vijay Singh.”

Scott Strange leads Aussies at World Golf Championship

First timer Scott Strange leads a solid Aussie contingent after the first round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron Ohio, just two shots behind leader Retief Goosen.

Strange, playing in his first ever World Golf Championship event finished the day at the top of the Aussie pile with a solid two under par 68 and is tied for sixth place in a group of 14 players including Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and Rocco Mediate.

“I played great,” said a delighted Strange after the round.  “I struck the ball nicely after about the third hole on. The golf course is there to be played a certain way and I just played it the way I could. I could have holed a few more putts and had a couple less but at the end of the day two under is a good score.”

One shot behind Strange is fellow first timer Brendan Jones, Rod Pampling, Peter Lonard and Adam Scott who are in a tie for 20th place.

2002 Champion Craig Parry, Nick O’Hern and Stuart Appleby all finished their rounds at even par with Appleby making an incredible comeback after blowing out to five over at the turn.

Two time World Golf Championship winner Geoff Ogilvy was satisfied with his one over par but could have finished even, except for missing a short putt for birdie at the last.

Another Albinski senior golf win

Another Albinski senior golf win

Albinski in Queensland Championship

In another impressive performance, Australian Senior Amateur Golf Champion Stefan Albinski has taken out the 2008 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship.

Enhancing his growing reputation as the best amateur senior golfer in Australia, Albinski defeated New Zealand senior legend Rodney Barltrop in an enthralling playoff after both had finished tied at one under par after 54 holes on the Bribie Island Golf Course north of Brisbane.

Albinski won the Australian men’s national senior title at his first attempt in Perth in April and followed that up with a sizzling win in the North Sydney Seniors Championship last month.

Albinski and Barltrop dominated the Queensland event, with third place going to defending champion Brian Sams (NSW) nine shots away.

It was an exciting climax to a great week as the 2007/ 2008 Australian Senior Order of Merit draws to a close with the final event, the Queensland Senior Open,  to take place at Nudgee Golf Club next week.

In wet conditions that cleared into the afternoon, the final round saw both players battle it out on the front nine, with nothing separating the two.

Barltrop holed his third shot from about 50 metres on the par 5, 12th hole for eagle to get to four under par at that point and three in front. He made three late bogeys including one on the last to allow Albinski back in. Albinski took full advantage with a birdie on the 12th to get to one under par and then a birdie on the 14th (par 3). A bogey on the last left him all square with Barltrop in regulation play.

Going down the difficult par four 10th hole in the sudden death playoff, Albinski managed a solid par after hitting the green in regulation. Barltrop hit his second in the green side bunker and failed to get the ball out, costing him any chance of the title.

In fading light, Albinski was announced 2008 Queensland Senior Men’s Amateur Champion.

Final Results:

 1    215   Stefan ALBINSKI   (NSW)   -    73 70 72
 2    215   Rodney BARLTROP   (NZ)   -    73 69 73

 8    230   Michael LEITCH   (NZ)   -    72 79 79

New South Wales took out the International Teams Event, eventually running away with the title, 16 shots ahead of nearest rivals New Zealand.

Adding to the Championship, Golf Queensland also awarded the following age and Nett winners:

55 - 59 Years- John Beaumont (Mt Gambier)

Australian golf legends compete in Queensland

Three legends of Australian golf, Rodger Davis (NSW), Bob Shearer (VIC) and Brian Jones (QLD) are among 58 senior golf professionals set to compete in the QLD Senior Open starting on Tuesday 22nd July at Nudgee Golf Club.

In addition to these legends, leading players from the Australian PGA Senior Order of Merit including John Clifford (NSW), Garry Merrick (SA) and 2008 Victorian Senior Open Champion Queenslander Michael Ferguson, will also be vying for the lion’s share of the $20,000 purse.

Davis, winner of more than 21 titles world wide, will be looking to achieve a hat trick of QLD Senior Opens after winning in 2006 and 2007.

The QLD Senior Tour kicks off next week with QLD Senior Open at Nudgee Golf Club, players will then travel to the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Darling Downs and Brisbane where the tour will conclude at the QLD Senior PGA Championship at Redland Bay Golf Club on the 22nd August.  In all the tour will stretch over 14 events for approximately $165,000.

Queensland PGA Executive Officer Ian Hepburn said, “The QLD Senior Tour is very popular amongst the Senior Professionals with many interstate and overseas players competing in almost every event in the five week schedule.  Importantly this popularity is complemented at a club level with strong participation from amateur golfers in all Senior Pro Am events held throughout the QLD Senior Tour”

The QLD Senior Open is one of nine events in the 2008 Living Choice Senior Series.  The series will be decided by the total aggregate scores over the nominated rounds of the Tour.

Rodger Davis wins Queensland PGA Senior Championship with a red hot 66 at Redland Bay

Rodger Davis wins QLD PGA Seniors ChampionshipA final round six under par (66) has sealed victory for Rodger Davis (NSW) at the 2008 QLD PGA Seniors Championship at Redland Bay Golf Club. Davis made eight birdies in his round with only two bogeys.

The QLD PGA Senior Championship was Davis’s fourth victory on the 2008 QLD Senior Tour.

“Four seasons in one day” was how Redland Bay host professional Len Beck described conditions with dangerous weather stopping play twice in the afternoon round. Players stuck out the conditions returning on both occasions and still managed to post some low rounds. Davis expressed his thanks to the amateur players who persevered despite the conditions and aided in the completion of the round.

First round leader Mike Ferguson (QLD) finsihed the Championship in outright second with rounds of 66 and 70 for a two day total of eight under par.

Ferguson wasn’t too upset with the second place as his round left him in outright first place on the 2008 Living Choice Senior Series with a total of 866. In outright second place for the series was 2008 Gold Coast Senior Open winner Garry Merrick (SA) who’s total came to 868.

Davis was not in contention for the Living Choice Senior Series due to an injury that occurred before the QLD Senior Open.

Stefan Albinski in sizzling win

Stefan Albinski in sizzling win

Current Australian Senior Amateur Golf Champion Stefan Albinski has confirmed his class with a sizzling win in the 2008 North Sydney Seniors Championship.

The Senior Order of Merit event was played over four days on four of Sydney’s best courses and Albinski has set an unbeatable record by posting the best score on each day.

Albinski, who won the Australian men’s national senior title in Perth in April, blitzed the field by 15 shots in winning 72-71-73-75=291.

The 72 hole tournament was played at Pymble, Pennant Hills, Avondale and Manly, all reasonably close to Albinski’s home course at Mona Vale GC.

Second place went to fellow NSW golfer Rick Oliver (76-79-73-78=306), who currently leads the AUSOOM points table.

NSW’s Tony Gresham (80-71-75-82) took third place, as he did in the national title. Fourth was Vince Clark (74-76-83-76=309) followed by Denis Dale (79-73-79-79=310).

High winds and fast greens on the final day at Manly made it hard for all competitors and Albinski’s grip on the tournament looked in jeopardy when he fell to be six over par on the front nine. However, he came back with a stirring two under on the final nine to make it a comfortable win.

The North Sydney Seniors Golf Championship is a major event in the NSW Senior Order of Merit as well as a point scoring event in the Australian Senior Order of Merit.

 Top 10 scores.

1.  291  Stefan Albinski 72-71-73-752.  306  Rick Oliver 76-79-73-78
3.  308  Tony Gresham 80-71-75-82

5.  310  Denis Dale 79-73-79-79

A Revolution in 50+ Golf Travel

A Revolution in 50+ Golf Travel

Beachfront Home South Australia

This is the sensational view from a Senior Golf Exchange listed beachfront home in Tennyson, South Australia. Owners Chris and Sue Watson are both members of  The Grange Golf Club in metropolitan Adelaide.

Older golfers gazing longingly at travel brochures or getting all misty eyed thinking about unreachable faraway links and saying to themselves, “if only”, can take heart.

Often, for the older age group it is not finding the time to take the golfing holiday of your dreams that is the problem, it’s the prohibitive costs involved.

Well, what if you could schedule, say, a three week holiday in the Australian or international location of your choosing, and the accommodation and associated costs were just a one off $99.

That’s right,  what if you not only got superior, home-style accommodation at that price, but the possibility of some special golf friendly extras thrown in, such as use of a motor vehicle, golf equipment and reduced private member introduced golf club green fees.

Not only that, but for that same $99 you could repeat the process as many times as you could arrange in a year. If it is all starting to sound like that old well-known television commercial, “but wait, there’s more!”, don’t be concerned. In this case it is all true.

This is a new, Australian based, golf related travel concept that is set to revolutionise holiday options for senior golfers. It is modeled on the spectacular growth of international and domestic home exchange programs - there are now some 60 such internet-based operations with more than 130,000 member listings.

But Adelaide entrepreneur and avid golfer Graeme Smith has taken the concept a step further and optimised it for golfers - particularly those aged 50 and over.

He has launched SeniorGolfExchange.com, which he says is the world’s only private member listing specifically designed for golfers, and one which will facilitate the opportunity to play the world’s best golf courses without incurring accommodation costs.

Essentially, Smith has adopted the increasingly popular concept of people swapping homes - or alternately hosting each other - for holidays, and improved and tweaked it for older golfers.

‘‘The aim is to offer golfers the opportunity to stay in privacy and comfort, close to virtually any world golfing region of their choosing,” Graeme says.

‘‘For Adelaide golfers that could mean a weekend within comfortable driving distance of, say, Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula or the sand belt. They could also travel to further afield golfing meccas such as Perth or the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

‘‘But I expect the jewel in the operation will be the international program which will give members the opportunity to spend several months abroad - potentially playing courses like St Andrews, Pinehurst and Pebble Beach - with no accommodation costs and reduced green fees through member introductions.”

There are also other spin-offs that will add appreciably to the concept’s appeal.

”Vehicle hire costs might also be avoided by the exchange process, and the same with golf equipment, even motorised or electric buggies,” he says.

‘‘It will also give members the opportunity to live like a local in the area when it comes to meals and entertainment.”

Initially, many people are attracted to the home exchange concept because of the huge cost benefits, but often they find that it is the actual experience that is the real value.  Things like making new friends and having the opportunity of living in an area like a local, rather than as tourists segregated away in an expensive but nondescript hotel.

As Graeme says, it can “provide golf travel experiences that money can’t buy.”

As a first reaction, some people might balk at the idea of having “strangers” in their homes and have a myriad of questions.

If you visit the extensive Senior Golf Exchange website you will see every possible issue and topic is covered down to the finest details. Everything can be discussed and agreed upon beforehand, so you will extensively “know” who you are dealing with long before there is any  home or hospitality exchanged. (Check out some of the member profiles to see the sorts of people involved with the scheme.)

It is one of the beauties of Graeme’s service that senior golf fits so perfectly with the home exchange concept. These schemes operate quite successfully with a general populace clientele without problem. Here you know you are dealing with senior golfers only. It is also ideal for golfers wishing to travel extensively within Australia playing in major veteran golf tournaments.

Graeme admits that, apart from his own passion for the game, this is one of the main reasons he specialised the exchange  for the senior golf market.

‘‘It is very much because of the ethos of the game and the fraternity it invokes,” he says. ‘‘What that means is that golfers know other golfers will respect the privileges, property and environment afforded to them. ”

‘‘It may sound corny but the great English writer PG Wodehouse got it absolutely right. ‘‘What he said was this - ‘Golf is the infallible test. The man who can go into a patch of rough alone,  with the knowledge that only God is watching him, and play his ball where it lies, is the man who will serve you faithfully and well’.”

Sticking with the golf theme, SeniorGolfExchange.com will also offer exchange arrangements to coincide with significant professional and amateur events around the world.

Officially launched in April, there are still foundation memberships available to the first 100 suitable applicants from each of the major regions of the world. This will entail a joining fee of $99 that will provide two years of free subscription. Life membership is available for just $499.

Enquiries can be made to at the Senior Golf Exchange website, or call Graeme Smith on 08 8344 8400 or Mobile 0412 822 233.

This US home, perched on a private golf course itself and minutes from Chanbers Bay Golf Course, selected for a future US Open, is one of the properties listed at the new Senior Golf Exchange private members club.

What Are Home And Hospitality Exchanges?

Home exchange is a reciprocal arrangement between two exchange partners to exchange vacant possession of each other’s home for an agreed period of time and with specific understandings relating to the use of each home’s facilities.

A non-simultaneous home exchange can occur if one exchange partner has a second or holiday home or may be travelling on another arrangement, and would prefer to have their home occupied in their absence, and “bank” an exchange opportunity for later.

Hospitality Exchange, sometimes referred to as “hosted”, is a two-part arrangement. One exchange partner stays with the other for an agreed period of time and at a later agreed date the positions are reversed. If, for a time, Members are precluded from offering accommodation within their home, a Hospitality Exchange, excluding accommodation may be arranged.

Exchanges don’t need to be “like-for-like”, or of the same duration. The exchange partners agree on what is acceptable to them and the end result may be a very creative combination of the various exchange options.

Because SeniorGolfExchange.com is a Private Members’ Club, it is anticipated about half of the exchanges will be Hospitality Exchange, sharing in some of their golfing experiences, and other common interests, which are discovered during search activity and time spent getting to know each other.

“First, search for a fellow Member with compatible circumstances, in a location you want to visit, then two way communication by all the means at your disposal - email, telephone, digital photos, video. Ask for references if they make you more comfortable.

Ask all the questions you need answers for. If you are still not comfortable with the prospect of handing over your home, select another Member as your exchange partner, or perhaps you are more suited to a Hospitality Exchange, with or without in-home accommodation.”

For answers to any questions, call Graeme Smith direct on 0412 822 233.
