No flip-flopping for Greg Norman

No flip-flopping for Greg Norman

GREG NORMAN was wearing thongs and swatting at flies but he wasn’t in the Australian outback.

Norman was in the media centre at The Lakes Golf Club shortly after completing his final round of the 2011 Emirates Australian Open.

The thongs (flip-flops to some) were due to a blister on his foot and it just seemed to be one persistent fly that had taken an immense liking to The Great White Shark.

The fly survived numerous attempted death blows, the 56 year old demonstrated on the weekend he still has quite a swing on him, before finally succumbing to a concerted joint effort by Norman and media centre overlord Kathy Shearer.

Norman was hoping the flies would be just one more hurdle for the visiting US Presidents Cup team.

“They’ll get them. A few of [the Americans] have been getting them this week but I hope it is more,” the International Team captain said.

Royal Melbourne isn’t exactly the wilds of the bush either but to many Australia  is still a strange far away land where the cars have bonnets (They wear hats?) rather than hoods and it is really not a good idea to root for a lot of  people if you value your reputation.

Norman was predicting elements such as home ground advantage and crowd support would help get the Internationals over the line in a very close Presidents Cup this week.

“I am very confident the guys will play extremely well. It will be closer than what we think. It is not going to be 1998 when we won by easy points with a stroll on the last day. I think it will come down to a couple of matches,” he said.

The Shark was asked if he thought the Australian fans were worth and extra player and secondly if he wanted them to “go crazy”.

“I would like to think we have a lot more than an extra player. We have the home field advantage. Come the weekend, there will be more enthusiasm. People take time to build into a tournament. In match play they will get to know the non-Australians and get to understand it. They knew Ernie and Retief. They probably don’t know Charl very well. Ryo Ishikawa, they have to get to know him, Y.E., Kim…I’ve got to get to know Kim as well.”

He was hoping for the fans to show their enthusiasm but respect the game.

“I want the fans to be crazy but respectful. It is the game of golf. They have to be respectful to the game and their opponents. Be crazy between shots and give the rah-rah-rah. I love when Pat Rafter or Lleyton Hewitt play. The Fanatics are there. Do you guys know the Fanatics? They get up between each point and go rah-rah-rah, go Lleyton go Lleyton whatever. As soon as the tennis starts, they stop. That’s what I’d like to spectators to do, really pull for the guys, for the team.”

For Norman, this week could be the culmination of a long held dream.

“When Tim Finchem  (PGA Tour Commissioner) asked me in 2007 if I would be interested in being the captain, I initially said no. I said I would only be interested if I could captain in Australia.

“I did not expect to be the captain in 2009 but he said if I captained in 2009 he was pretty sure I’d be captain in Australia. I said I’d do it.

“My whole goal along the line was to be captain in Australia. It was important for me. I have supported Australian golf tremendously well for 35 years and I was on the winning team in 98 here. I wanted to bring the team down here to win it as the captain. It was a big mission statement of mine back in 2007 and here we are we start tomorrow.”

The only desire now is that he doesn’t have to do it wearing thongs.  Last time he spent his entire Presidents Cup Captaincy week with his shoulder in a sling.

“[The foot] is pretty bad. Hopefully I don’t have to wear flip-flops for the rest of the week,” he said.

One thing he won’t be doing is flip-flopping over decisions and asking for too much advice and consensus.

“I learnt a lot from San Francisco,” he said. “My captaincy will definitely be different this coming week. I am going to be more a captain instead of seeking advice and other people’s opinions and trying to make everybody happy. At the end of the day you’ve got to make the decisions. By making those firm decisions, the guys will realise that this is the captain speaking, this is what he wants us to do. We’ll go and do it and score the point.”

Norman has a number of young members on his team who once looked to him for their golfing inspiration. Now it is the other way around.

“I love watching what these guys have done. They’ve watched me play. Now I am watching them play. To see them do what they did at Augusta this year, it was the first time I sat on the edge of my seat ever watching the game of golf. On my phone I have a photograph of the four Aussies on the leader board. They slotted Tiger Woods in there just to mess it up. They had Tiger just above Geoff Ogilvy. I was ticked off. I wanted them to drop Tiger’s name down one. That’s how proud I was. I was watching TV in my house and taking pictures of the TV because four Australians had a chance to win the Masters. They have watched me and now I am watching them.”

Cook replaces Michael Jordan

Cook replaces Michael Jordan

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida – United States Presidents Cup Captain Fred Couples announced today that 11-time PGA TOUR winner John Cook has been named Captain’s Assistant for the upcoming Presidents Cup matches.

Michael Jordan, who was named along with Jay Haas as a Captain’s Assistant for The Presidents Cup 2011, will be unable to attend the matches due to pending responsibilities as majority owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats.

Cook will join Haas as a Captain’s Assistant for the matches, to be played November 15-20, 2011, at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Cook will be participating in the Australian Open at The Lakes in Sydney the week prior to The Presidents Cup.

“John has been a friend of mine since we broke in together on the PGA TOUR in the early 1980s,” said Couples, playing this week at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. “Having achieved success at the highest levels in the golf world, I value his opinion greatly. Both John and Jay will provide tremendous support for myself and the United States Team in the upcoming matches at Royal Melbourne.”

Cook won 11 times in his PGA TOUR career, including a 1992 season that included three wins and a runner-up at the British Open. Cook has eight career victories on the Champions Tour, including three in 2011. He enters this week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship fourth in the race for the Charles Schwab Cup. Cook also made one start on the PGA TOUR in 2011, finishing third at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

“I’m thrilled that Freddie has asked me to serve as a Captain’s Assistant for the United States Presidents Cup Team,” said Cook. “Jay has told me on several occasions that his 2009 Presidents Cup experience was one of his career highlights, and that meant a lot to me in making my decision. I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping the team retain the Cup.”

Kuchar, Watney and Mahan for 2011 Aust Open and maybe more to follow

Kuchar, Watney and Mahan for 2011 Aust Open and maybe more to follow

Watney..."a real buzz" around the Aust Open

JUST a month out from the 2011 Emirates Australian Open in Sydney more of the world’s top players have confirmed as starters.

They are headed by World Number 9 Matt Kuchar, World Number 11 Nick Watney and fellow US Presidents Cup team member Hunter Mahan.

Robert Allenby has also confirmed he will be returning to the Open for the first time since his troubles with the infamous “party hole” in 2008.

Queenslander John Sender, who made a valiant last ditch attempt to get into the Presidents Cup squad, has also signed up.

There are still some names from the US Presidents Cup team missing from The Lakes line-up – including Mickelson and Stricker – but there was talk captain Fred Couples wanted all his team to play in Sydney to prepare for the big clash at Royal Melbourne the following week if possible, so who knows?

Sydney has so far amassed an unprecedented field with those above joining a growing list that includes Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Greg Norman, Fred Couples and defending champion Geoff Ogilvy.

Hamish Jones from Golf Australia was quick to rule out Mickelson, who will be playing in Singapore during the Open week. Stricker, who is nursing a shoulder problem and is unlikely, and Jim Furyk.

Others on the US team, including Bill Haas, Webb Simpson and David Toms are possibilities and could join The Lakes line-up in the next week or so.

There are also still possibilities in the Internationals team including the South Africans, Charl Schwartzel, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen and the South Koreans.

Jones didn’t think Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa was a chance and hadn’t heard his name mentioned as a possibility in a month or so.

Watney, who has won twice on the US PGA Tour this year, will be playing in the Australian Open for the first time.

“I’m really looking forward to being a part of the Championship in Sydney,” Watney said. “Most of my family are coming down for it”.

“There seems to be a real buzz around this year’s Open leading into the Presidents Cup and it is amazing how many top international players have won the tournament.”

Kuchar played in the 2000 Open at Kingston Heath Golf Club while Mahan is also a debutant.

Golf Australia CEO Stephen Pitt said the anticipation for the Emirates Australian Open was building rapidly.

“The excitement around the Open is extraordinary and we want to make sure no one misses out. Get in and buy your tickets now so you can come straight in and get into the thick of the action.,” Pitt said.

Tickets are on sale Ticketek or by phoning 132 849. To book travel packages for the championship, contact Flight Centre on 1300 778 433.

The 2011 Emirates Australian Open will be played at The Lakes Golf Club from 10-13 November.

The event is again sanctioned by OneAsia and the PGA Tour of Australasia and will be broadcast live on Network Ten.

It’s Allenby and Baddeley for Royal Melbourne

PRESIDENTS CUP International Team Captain Greg Norman has named Australians Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley in his 12 man squad to take on the Americans at Royal Melbourne in November.

US Captain Fred Couples confirmed he would be taking Tiger Woods and added Tour Championship winner Bill Haas when the official captain’s picks were announced today.

Norman said last week he would be choosing “the man not the flag” but obviously the local knowledge of the two Australian golfers could not be discounted.

Allenby, who will be making his fifth Presidents Cup appearance (a record third as a captain’s pick) has had considerable success on his home soil.

“I picked Robert Allenby as his performance around Royal Melbourne over the years has been extraordinary and his love for the golf course is very evident, his skill playing it is there and he has a lot of tenacity in these team competitions. It made him an automatic pick for me,” Norman said today at the captains media conference.

Baddeley has had a win on the US PGA Tour this year and five top tens, but no doubt played his way onto the team last weekend when he led the Tour Championship after three rounds and eventually finished just a stroke behind Haas tied for third.

Norman revealed this morning the remaining spot in the team had come down to the head to head performance last weekend of Baddeley and John Senden.

“I’m so excited and thankful that Greg picked me to be part of my first Presidents Cup team,” Baddeley said.

“It’s extremely special and it’s an honor to play for your country, and because I remember back in ’98 when The Presidents Cup was there last, I have vivid memories of watching the tournament and being there and being outside the ropes.”

The two Aussies will now join three of their compatriots already in the International Team as automatic selections. They are Jason Day, Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy.

The rest of the team consists of  South Africans Charl Schwartzel, Retief Goosen and Ernie Els, South Koreans KJ Choi, Kim Kyung-tae and YE Yang plus Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa.

Couples goes with Woods and Haas

Couples said he was “very excited” Woods would be on the team.

“I made that pick, I don’t know, six weeks ago,” Couples said. “We’ve had a few conversations since then and a lot of texts, and I’m just thrilled that Tiger is healthy and ready to play and wants to be on the team.”

His second pick made it a very big week for Tour Championship and FedEx Cup winner Haas.

“My second pick is Bill Haas, last week’s double?winner,” Couples said. “Bill for the last two years has played phenomenal golf, winning three times and losing a couple of times in a playoff and it was a very close race with Brandt Snedeker and Keegan Bradley. But Bill, knowing he had to win last week to be on the team he went out and did it..” .

The automatic US qualifiers were Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Steve Stricker, Webb Simpson, Nick Watney, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Hunter Mahan and David Toms.

The 2011 Presidents Cup will take place from November 17 – 20 at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, scene of the International Team’s only victory in 1998.

2011 Presidents Cup Captain’s Pick Media Conference Transcript

2011 Presidents Cup Captain’s Pick Media Conference Transcript

HERE is the full transcript of the media conference in which 2011 Presidents Cup captains Greg Norman and Fred Couples announce and explain their team selections and Tiger Woods, Bill Haas, Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley comment on their inclusion.

LAURA HILL: It’s a pleasure to welcome U.S. Presidents Cup team captain, Fred Couples, and International Team captain Greg Norman to the call.

As you all know the Top?10 on The Presidents Cup standings for both teams were finalized on September 18 after the BMW Championship, so today we’ll be rounding out the U.S. and international teams as each captain chooses two players to add to their squads.

Just a little bit of housekeeping, the format, we’ll start with Fred Couples as the quote, unquote, visiting captain in Australia this year. He’ll name his first pick, who will give us his reaction and we’ll move over to Greg who will name his pick and back and forth.

We are fortunate to have all four picks on the line. So they each will comment after their names are announced and from there we will open up for Q&A. With that said, I would like to welcome Fred and have him make his first pick.

FRED COUPLES: Thank you very much. And my first pick is Tiger Woods, from Palm Beach, Florida. Very excited about that. I made that pick, I don’t know, six weeks ago. We’ve had a few conversations since then and a lot of texts, and I’m just thrilled that Tiger is healthy and ready to play and wants to be on the team.

LAURA HILL: Tiger, if we can get a quick reaction from you, as well.

TIGER WOODS: Yeah, just want to say thanks to Fred. I’m honored to be a part of the team. Really looking forward to representing our country and playing with my teammates. It’s always been a special honor to play in these teams. And to go back down to Australia again and play in The Presidents Cup is something I’m really looking forward to. I know we haven’t done it since ’98 but really looking forward to getting down there and mixing it up with the boys.

LAURA HILL: Greg, your turn.

GREG NORMAN: My first pick is Robert Allenby. And the reason why I picked Robert is his performances around Royal Melbourne over the years have been extraordinary. I do believe at one time he won by ten shots. His love for the golf course is very, very much evident. He’s still playing the golf course there. He’s a great team player. He has a lot of tenacity in these team competitions. His spirit in the locker room or cabin with the other guys is very, very high, and so he was an automatic pick for me.

LAURA HILL: Robert, can we get your reaction, please?

ROBERT ALLENBY: Thanks, Greg. It’s an absolute honor to be on the team, and also to be on the team with you as the captain, as well. The last Presidents Cup, you did a fantastic job. And I think out of all of The Presidents Cups for me, going down to Melbourne and playing at Royal Melbourne is probably one of the biggest highlights in my career to be on that team.

Royal Melbourne is obviously a golf course that ?? it is my No. 1 golf course in the world; it’s my favorite, and I have a pretty good record around there.

I know with the team that we have, I’m just thrilled to be in it. It’s just an absolute honor, and I really can’t wait to be part of the team again and get down there and hopefully we have a great showing.

LAURA HILL: Thank you, Robert. Okay, Fred your last pick.

FRED COUPLES: My second pick is Bill Haas, last week’s double?winner. Bill for the last two years has played phenomenal golf, winning three times and losing a couple of times in a playoff and it was a very close race with Brandt Snedeker and Keegan Bradley. But Bill, knowing he had to win last week to be on the team he went out and did it and he’s my second pick.

LAURA HILL: Bill, if we can hear from you, please.

BILL HAAS: Yes, I’m honored to be on the team. Thanks to Fred for picking me. This is a very special thing. It’s something that I’ve worked for, kind of set as a goal from the beginning of the year. And for it to happen like this is awesome. Fred is someone I’ve looked up to and been a good friend of my dad’s ever since I was growing up; and to play on his team makes it that much more special.

And like these other guys have said, I can’t wait to get down there and compete in an event like this, and it’s pretty special to be it a part of it.

LAURA HILL: Okay, Greg, the last announcement for you?

GREG NORMAN: My last pick is Aaron Baddeley. It actually was a very interesting way we came about it. I actually put in a call to both Aaron Baddeley and John Senden at the start of THE TOUR Championship out of courtesy. Also on the list was Vijay Singh and Camilo Villegas, and obviously Louis Oosthuizen.

But knowing that we are playing in the backyard of Australia, I wanted to hopefully load up the team with as many Aussies as I possibly could. And with the way Aaron performed, and John Senden performed in THE TOUR Championship, I put them both on notice that those two were under scrutiny, and whoever played the best at THE TOUR Championship would obviously get the final nod.

So Aaron put in a tremendous performance there, and had a chance of winning the golf tournament, played extremely well and has played very, very well for a few years now. So to bring him down to one of his favorite golf courses, as well, and play in his backyard obviously was a tough decision. But Aaron is the No. 2 pick.

LAURA HILL: Aaron, if we could get your reaction, please.

AARON BADDELEY: I’m so excited and thankful that Greg picked me to be part of my first Presidents Cup team. It’s extremely special and it’s an honor to play for your country, and because I remember back in ’98 when The Presidents Cup was there last, I have vivid memories of watching the tournament and being there and being outside the ropes.

And so for this time to be part of the team is something that will be probably one of the most special memories of my whole year. So I’m excited to get down there. I’m excited to be part of the team. Golf is such an individual sport; to be part of a team is going to be a very special week.

LAURA HILL: Congratulations to all of the picks. Jay Haas is on the line with us, as well, and obviously a special day for the Haas family with Bill being chosen today.

Q. Tiger, I was hoping you might be able to just update us on where things stand with you right now, with your game, your health; have you had any setbacks, and how are things coming along?

TIGER WOODS: You know, Bob, things are going great. We’re practicing very hard up at Medalist, and I’m playing as much as I possibly can, something that I hadn’t not done all summer, because I hadn’t been cleared to do it. Now I have the clearance to do that. My training sessions are great. Strength has come back. My explosiveness has come back through my training, and now just trying to get my feels back, and it feels great.

Sean has come down a few times, and we’ve worked, and we had wonderful sessions. And really looking forward to playing next week at the Fry’s, and after that, I’m playing at the Aussie Open in Sydney, and really looking forward to getting my game rounded for The Presidents Cup.

Q. Are you at the point where you’re itching to get back out there? It has been a while now since the PGA.

TIGER WOODS: Yeah, I am looking to get out there and compete, no doubt. That’s something that I have pretty much ?? and I played two events, but didn’t play very well in those few events at Akron and the PGA.

Really excited to get back out there and compete, and knowing that I’m finally healthy enough to do it now, and I’ve practiced, something I had not done in preparation for Akron and the PGA.

But now that I’ve actually practiced, I’ve gotten even stronger in my lifting sessions, so things it are definitely shaping up quickly.

Q. My question is for the Aussie contingent obviously; Aaron Baddeley, especially, after the hard luck on the weekend, how pleasing is it that you were able to deliver, and Greg, is that what you really expected him to do?

GREG NORMAN: Aaron, how about you first.

AARON BADDELEY: Yeah, after Greg gave us a call on the Monday, it was really just a matter of just sort of trying to put it out of my mind and go out and just play golf.

So Tuesday and Wednesday, I spent a lot of time, especially on the putting green, trying to really feel like I was getting in the game in order and be ready for the week and stay in the week. The game felt good; and it was pleasing to be able to play that well, when I knew that Greg was watching so closely, with so much on the line, I was really pleased to be able to perform when I needed to.

GREG NORMAN: From my perspective, I always felt that if somebody was keeping an eye on me and wanted me to perform, I wanted to know. I always like to know how people perform under pressure, and by knowing ?? having the knowledge in the back of your head, it’s tough. It’s very good for your concentration, very good for your commitment of where you want to go, and at the end of the day, you have to perform.

Getting into The Presidents Cup, and you perform under the highest of pressures, that’s obviously a lot more than playing in the TOUR Championship and a stroke?play event. I suspected both of them to play very, very well actually. John Senden was just as excited about the phone call and looking forward to the week. Obviously Aaron played the better golf.

At the end of the day, and this might be of interest to you, it was the same thing I did with Geoff Ogilvy. I called Geoff up many weeks ago, because he had fallen out of the Top?10. And I just said: Hey, Geoff, I need you on the team, what can I do to help you relax your mind. And I basically said to him that, Geoff, don’t worry about it, you’re going to be on the team, irrespective whether you’re in the Top?10 or what.

So at the end of the day, I took the pressure off of him because he wanted to be on the team so badly. So by taking the pressure off him, he went out there and played extremely well and got himself in the Top?10. I went two different ways with my guys. I needed all of them. I needed Robert; I needed Aaron; I needed Geoff; I needed three guys on the team and the end of the day it just worked out perfectly for us.

Q. Two questions, one for Tiger and one for Tiger and Fred. Tiger, given your lack of competitive starts over the last couple of months, how much does that matter, given that not only it’s match play, but it’s team match play, and if you can just talk about the dynamics of that.

TIGER WOODS: Well, I think that ?? well, I’m playing in two stroke?play events prior to that to get myself ready for The Presidents Cup, and granted, it is match play, and you know, we as Presidents Cuppers, we play every day, which is very different than The Ryder Cup. Every player must play every day.

So knowing that going down there, we are going to be basically playing all four matches, it’s fun. It’s something I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully Stricks is healthy enough and Mr. Couples will be nice enough to put us together again, something I’m looking toward to and hope that will happen.

Q. And for both of you, how do you avoid what happened the last time you went down there in ’98?

FRED COUPLES: Well, I think we are trying to solve that problem. Guys are playing all over, and to be perfectly honest with you, they were just better. They played extremely well. You know, I would like to say sometimes that we may have had a few weeks off where we didn’t play much golf. It was in early December. A lot of us were playing in Adelaide the week before; at Royal Melbourne, the International Team was better.

This year, several of us are playing in Sydney the week before, including myself and Greg. We’ll be having a good time. The guys will be loose and limber, and hopefully one of the Presidents Cup team players can win, whether it’s on our side or Greg’s side.

Reality sets in when you get there. Not all of the players are going to be playing their best, but what you need is consistency and you need to get points, and we have been very good at that over the years. But that one year at Royal Melbourne, we just ?? we were smoked. Every single day, they were out better than us.

Q. Would you tell us, going into THE TOUR Championship, did it come down to which of those three guys played the best, or did Billy actually have to win to maybe get ahead of one of the others?

FRED COUPLES: Well, I mean, Jay is on the line, so Jay and I talked about this scenario, and Michael, Michael Jordan. We went over this probably a month ago and the way for us to do this was really to let the guys play. I know Greg said he told Geoff Ogilvy and some guys that Tiger is on the team.

Bill Haas knew he had to win last week, and he did it. I talked to Bill ?? I did not bother him during the tournament. I think he’s smart enough to know that what happened, happened.

Keegan Bradley, I thought the world of Keegan Bradley and I explained a lot of things to him. He’s a great young player. If Steve Stricker is hurt, Keegan will be the pick to take Steve’s spot. And that’s not very easy to say or makes him feel any better.

But the other guy was Brandt Snedeker, and all of these guys, they want to be there. I know the Australian players certainly work hard, and Aaron has had an unbelievable year, and Robert Allenby, a member there, I believe, has played well.

For my guys, they knew what they had to do and it was just a matter of Bill winning. And I could not leave him off the team after that; when a guy knows second place wasn’t ?? and he’ll tell you, second place isn’t good enough, and he understood that. So took the day off yesterday, let everything is settled and called him this morning and he was going Down Under.

Q. Just curious when you told Bradley and how he reacted since he’s the only American with a major this year; that must have been a tough blow.

FRED COUPLES: Yeah, he’s the only American with a major the last two years. You know, I tried to explain just a few things to him. He’ll tell you, I’m not one to say, hey, you’re going to be on plenty of teams. I wouldn’t want to hear that. I know he’s a young player. I just felt like ?? I laid it out on the line and told him, you know, for really, three or four weeks now, where everyone stood. Obviously he’s a Major winner. Also a winner at the Byron Nelson under very tough conditions on a very hard course.

It just felt like in this instance, Bill Haas has played two years, never been outside the Top?12 position. He’s been inside the Top?10 most of the time. And you know, if Keegan would have finished fourth or fifth last week and Bill would have lost to Hunter Mahan, the others assistants will tell you that Keegan would have been chosen.

Q. Tiger, are you going to have an opportunity to get to work at all with Joe LaCava? I know he’s one of the best caddies in the business, but prior to you teeing it up, are you going to have an opportunity for him to get a feel for how far you hit shots and whatnot?

TIGER WOODS: Well, I certainly hit the ball shorter than Dustin, so he’s going to have to adjust that.

As far as working, we’re working together at the Fry’s and we’re working going forward ?? at The Presidents Cup. I will probably see the week before at the Aussie Open, I’m playing that, and in a round ?? (audio distortion) and in other practice sessions, but we are going to have ?? wing it on the fly at the Fry’s and it will be our (audio distortion. )

Q. Greg, you indicated you were going to pick the player and not the flag, and you ended up with two Aussies, which probably is a smart play. What do you expect that environment to be like especially with both of those guys being home boys?

GREG NORMAN: Well, I think the environment is going to be exactly what it was like in 1998. It’s going to be very, very enthusiastic. Obviously the balance of my team is predominately southern hemisphere guys, South Africa and Australia.

But at the same time, I think the way my team has balanced out, the pairings look very easy to tell you the truth. The guys are so keen to play, and I don’t see anything different, I really don’t. I think the performance of my team, the guys are so excited. I’ve spoken to every single one of them. They are extremely excited. They want to get down there. They know they have lost the Presidents Cup every year except one, and they want to try to win The Presidents Cup, no question, and the Aussies want to do it in their backyard.

I think the spirit of the competition is going to be very, very high. The intensity is probably going to be high. I know many of the boys are going to being come down there with playing their way in.

And Freddie was a 100 percent correct. Back in ’98, guys were taking time off before they got there and flew right in. Most of the guys are either going to be in the same time zone, whether it’s Singapore, China or in Australia, so they are going to be over the time zone. I think the competition is going to be closer and tougher than what we experienced in ’98.

Q. Robert and Aaron, you must be absolutely pumped to get home and get back out onto Royal.

ROBERT ALLENBY: Yeah, I’m very excited. Yeah, trying to make this team, it’s been one of my goals all year. And to be finally chosen on the team is definitely a huge thrill. Obviously going down to Royal Melbourne and playing there is super special, as well.

And I think from an Australian and Presidents Cup, playing in Australia and having Greg Norman as a captain, the buzz that we will have down there will be just unbelievable.

AARON BADDELEY: I definitely reiterate what Robert was saying. For an Aussie to play in The Presidents Cup, it really does not get any better than that, and especially with Greg being the captain, because I mean, I know for me, Greg was the man I looked up to growing up. I always got up early to watch TV, to watch Greg; and to have him captain the team in Australia, to me, that’s an absolute dream come true.

So going to be exciting. I think the atmosphere is going fantastic. The Aussies love to get behind Aussies, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Q. Robert, whenever you found out from Greg that you were selected for the team can you talk about the relief that was, given you were a spectator in ’98?

ROBERT ALLENBY: Yeah, obviously a huge relief. I think everyone, Greg knew ?? I think everyone’s known how much and how important it was for me to try to get in that team and what it really meant to me. Obviously Melbourne is my home. I’ve been playing at Royal Melbourne since I was 12 years old. I’ve had some success there, and the relief was humongous. Greg will tell you himself how happy I was, and you know the first thing I said was that you’ll get 12 billion percent out of me to get the absolute best out of my ability that I have to play the game of golf. And as I said, to be on that team with Greg as the captain is even more special.

Q. Did you offer to wax his boat or anything?

ROBERT ALLENBY: (Laughing) I could probably wax the boat he’s got now ?? I could wax it.

Q. For either Tiger or Fred, how much have you been in touch with Stricker, and if for whatever reason he might not be able to go, do you have any preference on who you would like to be paired with?

TIGER WOODS: I have been texting Stricks, and obviously he’s having his MRI today. I don’t know the results of that, if that’s what you’re asking. But as far as any of the guys on the team, we have a hell of a team and I would like to go out with anybody. We have got a great mix of young guys and some older players, so looking forward to it either way.

Q. What are the most important things you guys have got to do for the next two months?

FRED COUPLES: The most important things? I think for me it’s pretty much getting ready to go down to Royal Melbourne, which I’m not playing, but it’s one of my favorite places in the whole world is Melbourne, and the week before, I’m going to Sydney.

But you know, today was a tough day for me. We had some picks to be made and Greg certainly handled them well. And I really like those two players that he chose, and I certainly liked the way Bill Haas played last week.

For me, it’s pretty much over. The clothing is set. The gifts are all set. Now we just have to all make sure we catch our flights.

Q. Following up on what you said about letting Geoff know he was on the team, and Adam Scott you mentioned was a leader in this situation, how much much an effect did those two have in your decision making? Did you listen to the boys push for the other two Australians?

GREG NORMAN: I had constant communication with Adam and Jason Day. It was nonstop. I had to seek the opinion of those guys, and obviously Timmy Clark and Frank Nobilo were integral parts as well. They all know each other’s games and they know them as individuals. So, yeah, I did consult them.

Adam was very, very forthright in his thoughts and opinions on having a Geoff Ogilvy or Robert Allenby or an Aaron Baddeley or a John Senden on the team. He wanted to see it loaded up with Aussies, because obviously it’s in our backyard. And Jason Day, between the two of those young guys, they have just been absolutely the Standard Bearers for the International side out there on TOUR right now.

The enthusiasm they have shown, not just in the last month, but in the last six months, when Adam was staying with me for the Florida Swing, back in the early part of the year, that’s all we talked about was The Presidents Cup and how do we prepare for it and who could be on the team and who may not be on the team. And as the months went by and the players were changing dramatically, he started texts me more and more and actually picking up the phone and just speaking to me about it.

So I love that type of open communication with my guys and it’s been no different, all the way through to Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, K.J. Choi, Y.E. Yang; all of the guys have been very, very up front with me about how they feel about this coming Presidents Cup.

Q. Do you think you will put Jason and Adam together? I know you don’t want to give too much away?

GREG NORMAN: That’s a decision I’ll make with Frank and Tim Clark when we go down there and prepare and see how the guys are playing and how balanced they are with themselves on the golf course, off the golf course.

There’s a lot goes into the pairings, and people think that it’s automatic, but when I look at my team, it does look very simplified in a lot of ways, but the end of the day, you won’t make that decision until you’re on the spot.

I completely agree with Freddie. I think that his team is, the balance of his team, these two picks are just phenomenal picks. One guy who has basically dominated the game for years and has a tremendous amount of respect out there, to young Bill who has done a tremendous job in earning his way on the team.

Both of us have been in a really tough position. I had to leave off major championship winners in Louis Oosthuizen and Vijay Singh. I had to look at those guys and John Senden and Camilo Villegas. It really is a tough call. Answering a question that I didn’t answer before for Steve, our work is done. And now that it’s done, we can sit back and just prepare and getting ready and I’m just now enjoying practicing myself, which I haven’t been able to do for the last 12 months basically. Now the fun starts.

LAURA HILL: Thank you, Fred and Greg, for joining us, and congratulations to the four picks. We look forward to seeing all of you and the rest of both teams in just less than seven weeks down at Royal Melbourne. Thank you all.

Bradley leads 2011 Tour Championship

Bradley leads 2011 Tour Championship

Keegan Bradley

KEEGAN BRADLEY has a two stroke lead and one foot on the plane to Royal Melbourne after the first round of the 2011 Tour Championship in Atlanta.

The 25 year old American rookie fired a six under par 64 to lead fellow countrymen Jason Dufner and Chez Reavie and Englishman Luke Donald tied for second on four under.

Australians Adam Scott and Jason Day are well placed just a stroke further back, tied in 5th with three others.

It is early days in the 30-man field FedEx Cup final event but it seems after a stellar rookie year Bradley doesn’t have to do much more to find himself on Fred Couples Presidents Cup team.

International Team cup hopeful Aaron Baddeley did his chances no damage sitting on 2-under while his main competitors John Senden (3-over) and Vijay Singh (4-over) will have to improve to impress captain Greg Norman.

Both Day and Scott remain mathematical chances to take out the $US10 million dollar bonus for winner of the FedEx Cup, but must win this event and have those above them falter to have any real chance.

Scott was displaying his usual precision ball striking but for once his new long putter was letting him down.

“It was a good round out there today. I played really solid,” Scott said. “I hit a lot of greens but left a lot of chances out there. To finish birdie was a nice way to end the day and make something out of what could have been a really good round.

“I had so many chances from 10 feet today so that’s a little disappointing but it’s good that I’m playing really great and giving myself some chances.

“If I can do that for three more days, I’m pretty sure I’m going to have a hot one out there.”

Day improved as his round progressed, picking up three shots on his last five holes.

Fresh from securing his Presidents Cup spot last weekend, Geoff Ogilvy is also lurking after firing a one-under-par 69 to be tied 16th.

The 2011 Tour Championship Preview: Leaderboard

The 2011 Tour Championship Preview: Leaderboard

THE US PGA Tour end of season playoffs began with 125 golfers but that number has now been whittled down to 30 for the final event, the Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

All 30 players have a mathematical chance of winning the season long FedEx Cup but only the top five are assured of winning the cup and the US$10 million that comes with it if they win the event this week.

All the rest have to rely on the performance of others.

Take Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy, who has performed some amazing feats in the past couple of weeks just to get into 24th spot and still be in contention.

Firstly, he needs to win and then he needs the current top five – Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Matt Kuchar – to all perform poorly.

“Webb Simpson must finish 17th or worse, which is probably not going to happen, you wouldn’t think,” Ogilvy mused this week. “Dustin Johnson has to finish sixth or worse. Justin and Luke have to finish fourth or worse, which isn’t going to happen because Luke doesn’t finish out of the top three anymore, does he?”

But winning this tournament is a big prize in itself.

“I’d love to win this golf tournament,” Ogilvy said. “That would be nice because people are forgetting this one of the tour’s special golf tournaments – The Players Championship, the Tour Championship, the Tournament of Champions. It’s still the Tour Championship, and it would be pretty special to have a Tour Championship on your mantle.”

Not to mention the fact that the Victorian’s playoff performances have now earned him a definite spot on Greg Norman’s Presidents Cup team.

So have compatriots and fellow playoff partners Jason Day (currently 6th) and Adam Scott (19th).

The other Aussies involved this week, John Senden (9th thanks to his second placing last week) and Aaron Baddeley (27th) have this one further opportunity to impress Norman and gain a captain’s pick.

So does Presidents Cup stalwart Vijay Singh, in the field this week in 23rd spot.

Also increasing the pressure for those involved is that the FedEx bonus monies go all the way down the field, with the runner-up securing a US$3 million boost, third receiving $2 million and so on.

It should be a fascinating tournament with the par 70, 7154 yard course providing a stern test of golf.

The 2011 Tour Championship will be telecast live in Australia on Fox Sports. 1st Round Friday 3 – 8am; 2nd Round 3 – 8am; 3rd Round Sunday 3 – 8am; Final Round Monday 2am to 8am.

Ogilvy secures 2011 Presidents Cup spot

Ogilvy secures 2011 Presidents Cup spot

Ogilvy...his 3rd placing puts him in Tour Playoff and Presidents Cup

GEOFF OGILVY has secured automatic selection to the Presidents Cup team and John Senden, Aaron Baddeley and Robert Allenby have all promoted their credentials for a Captains pick after the final found of the BMW Championship in Chicago.

Senden finished the third of the four FedEx Cup playoff events in second place behind Englishman Justin Rose while Ogilvy finished third.

Five Australians will now advance to the 30 man $US10 million Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta this week, Senden, Ogilvy, Baddeley, Jason Day and Adam Scott.

Allenby and Marc Leishman bow out of the playoffs but Allenby at least will be hoping to remain in contention for the Presidents Cup in the mind of team captain Greg Norman.

Presidents Cup International Team

With two captain picks to come next week, The International Team now comprises the following (with their BMW Championship placing in brackets):

1 Jason Day (AUS)  (Tied for 49th)

2 Adam Scott (AUS) (Tied for 37th

3 Charl Schwartzel (RSA) (Tied for 42nd)

4 K.J. Choi (KOR) (Tied for 10th)

5 Kyung-tae Kim (KOR)

6 Retief Goosen (RSA)

7 Geoff Ogilvy (AUS) (3rd)

8 Ernie Els (RSA) (Tied for 42nd)

9 Y.E. Yang (KOR) (Tied for 12th)

10 Ryo Ishikawa (JPN)

US Team

1 Matt Kuchar  (Tied for 22nd)

2 Steve Stricker (Withdrew with injury)

3 Dustin Johnson (Tied for 65th)

4 Webb Simpson (5th)

5 Nick Watney (Tied for 22nd)

6 Phil Mickelson (Tied for 56th)

7 Bubba Watson (Tied for 53rd)

8 David Toms (Tied for 10th)

9 Hunter Mahan (Tied for 42nd)

10Jim Furyk (Tied for 22nd)

Ogilvy, who is feeling a lot healthier after spending months dealing with shoulder and stomach problems, was the only player to shot four rounds in the 60s.

He acknowledged the difficult choices facing Greg Norman.

“On the outside looking in, I think there’s Robert (Allenby), who’s won multiple golf tournaments at Royal Melbourne; Aaron (Baddeley), who’s played pretty well this year; Vijay (Singh) is not far away and he played well a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes. He’s got some great players to pick from, and I don’t think any players he picks are going to be wrong.”

The Victorian didn’t shy from the prospect of Norman choosing two Australians.

“Well, if everything else is equal, if two players are equal, you’d probably pick the home country guy, wherever it was. But there are no two golfers who are equal, so everybody brings their strengths,” Ogilvy said.

2011 BMW Championship Preview: Live Leaderboard

2011 BMW Championship Preview: Live Leaderboard

THE pressure will really by on a number of participants at the 2011 BMW Championship this weekend with both Presidents Cup and FedEx Cup playoff spots up for grabs for many.

The FedEx winner gets $US10 million to pocket while it is zilch for the 24 golfers who make it on to a Presidents Cup team. That’s all about heart, honor and prestige.

The players know pretty much exactly the results they need to advance from the 70 man field at the Cog Hill Country Club outside of Chicago this week to the 30 player field at the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week.

They also know what it will take to get or maintain an automatic selection in either the US of International Presidents Cup teams.

At one and two in the International team standings respectively are Jason Day and Adam Scott.

They have all the Presidents Cup honor and prestige in the bag, they just need to worry about grabbing the FedEx bonus cash.

Day has had a remarkably successful year, amassing $A3.58 million in prizemoney with runner-up finishes in two of the four majors and nine top 10 finishes from 19 starts on the US tour, second only to World No.1 Luke Donald with 11.

But he still hasn’t had a win this year. The young Queenslander needs a top two finish this week to ensure he is in the top five going into the final in Atlanta.

Players in the top five in Atlanta are masters of their own destiny. Start in the top five and win and you automatically take the FedEx Cup and golf’s richest prize. Start outside the five and you need to rely on other results.

Adam Scott is the only other Australian assured of a starting spot next week. Obviously, the higher he gets in the field this week the better chance he has next week.

The other five Australians involved this week, Aaron Baddeley, Geoff Ogilvy, Allenby, John Senden and Marc Leishman, all need very strong showings to figure in either event.

To progress in the play-offs series Baddeley needs a top 50 finish while Allenby and Senden need top four and Ogilvy and Leishman need top three results to have a chance.

Presidents Cup Selections

Ogilvy moved into the Presidents Cup automatic selection top 10 by a very slender margin this week and needs at least a top 25 spot in the BMW to be assured of retaining it.

The current table looks like this:

Current rank       Player                               Finish needed to potentially move to No.10

10                        Geoff Ogilvy                    25th

11                         Louis Oosthuizen          Not in field this week

13                         Vijay Singh                     9th

14                         Aaron Baddeley             6th

15                         Robert Allenby              5th

16                         Rory Sabbatini               5th

20                        Camilo Villegas              Win

23                         John Senden                  Win

(Tim Clark in 12th spot is out injured)

“I’m aware I can fall back out but it’s better to start this week 10th than 11th,” Ogilvy said in Chicago this week. “There is nothing I want more than to be automatically in after this week.”

“The more Aussies that make it into the Presidents Cup team automatically, the less Aussies that need to get picked by Greg [Norman] so we could really help each other this week,” he said.

“Anything can happen. Robert (Allenby), Badds (Baddeley) and I could finish top three this week and make it to Melbourne – now that would be something.”

US Presidents Cup Team

The top of the U.S. Team standings has remained relatively unchanged over the past few months, with Matt Kuchar (No. 1), Steve Stricker (No. 2), Dustin Johnson (No. 3), Phil Mickelson (No. 4) and Nick Watney (No. 5) currently leading the way.

Webb Simpson, on the strength of two wins in his last three starts, moved from No. 16 after the PGA Championship to No. 6 currently. Bubba Watson, with two wins earlier this season, is ranked No. 7. All but Stricker and Mickelson will be Presidents Cup “rookies.”

From there, the U.S. standings are incredibly close. Hunter Mahan (No. 8), Jim Furyk (No. 9) and David Toms (No. 10) – all Presidents Cup veterans – are separated by less than 200,000 points. Points are based on money earned since the 2009 Wyndham Championship, with money earned in 2011 counting as double.

With an $8 million purse and no cut this week at the BMW Championship, players all the way down to Charles Howell III at No. 23 still mathematically have a shot at playing their way onto the team.

FedEx Cup Standings

The current FedEx top ten is 1. Webb Simpson, 2. Dustin Johnson, 3. Matt Kuchar, 4. Luke Donald, 5. Brandt Snedeker, 6. Jason Day, 7. Nick Watney, 8. Steve Stricker, 9. Chez Reavie, 10. Phil Mickelson (16. Adam Scott, 25. Aaron Baddeley)

The BMW Championship will be broadcast live in Australia on Fox Sports. 1st Round, 5am – 8am Friday; 2nd Round, 5am – 8am Saturday; 3rd Round, 2am – 5.30am Sunday; Final Round, 2am – 8am Monday .
