Mike Harwood gets his 2012 European Senior Tour campaign off to a flying start

LANKY Victorian Mike Harwood got his 2012 European Senior Tour off to a flying start with a second placing at the Mallorca Senior Open in Spain on the weekend.

Harwood shot a final round 1-under 70 to finish on 6-under equal second with South African Chris Williams and England’s Paul Wesselingh.

They were two shots behind the winner, Garry Wolstenholme, who had the distinction of being England’s most capped amateur before turning professional at the ripe old age of 50.

Wolstenholme shot a final round 69 at the Pula Golf Club for an eight-under total to claim what is his second Senior Tour title.

“Everything just clicked into place,” said Wolstenholme. “I came with no expectations so I cannot tell you how delighted I am. This is a genuine bonus.”

Graham Banister hit a sizzling final round 5-under 67 to come in as the next best Aussie on 1-under while Peter Fowler, fresh from his recent success on the PGA Legends Tour in South Australia, opened with a 69 but followed it with a 71 and 74 to finish 1-over in 16th spot.

Fowler won the 2011 European Senior Tour Order of Merit and will be keen to defend the title.

Fond memories help Harwood lead 2011 Senior British Open

Fond memories help Harwood lead 2011 Senior British Open

Mike Harwood

WINNING memories have helped Australia’s Mike Harwood to a share of the lead after the first round of the 2011 Senior British Open.

Twenty years after winning the European Open at Walton Heath Golf Club, Harwood again showed his liking for the historic Surrey venue with an opening 4-under round of 68.
Harwood, currently seventh on the European Senior Tour Order of Merit, leads the championship alongside Irishman Mark McNulty and 1989 British Open winner Mark Calcavecchia of the US.

Harwood potted seven birdies in the first 15 holes to lead the field by two strokes but lost that leading margin with bogeys on the difficult 16th and 18th holes.

The 52 year old Victorian was nonetheless delighted with his performance on his return to the course which yielded the last of his five European Tour titles, before he swapped life on Tour for a career as a club professional back in Australia.
“I’ve got some great memories of this place. I’ve been thinking about this event since it was announced it was going to come here. So I got some good positive vibes, and I’m trying to feed off them,” Harwood said.
“I shot 65 on the last day to win the European Open, about five weeks after I’d finished second in The Open. I remember I was on the 16th green, watching the other guys playing the 14th. I looked over to my caddie and said: “These guys are dreaming”. I was at the pinnacle of my career at that particular moment on that green. And I went on to win by a couple of shots. I’ve always got that in the back of my mind. It’s great to be back here.”

A shot behind the leaders was South Africa’s David Frost and unheralded Scot Albert MacKenzie, while defending champion Bernhard Langer of Germany was one of seven players on two-under.

Pre-tournament favourite Tom Watson was singing the praises of his putting after his Open performance but on rain sodden day that skill seemed to desert him.

Three-time winner and eight-time major champion shot a 75 to lie seven shots off the pace.

Peter Fowler (71) finished on 1-under at T13 to be the next best placed Australian, while Peter Senior won’t be happy with this 2-over 74. Rodger Davis shot 76 while David Merriman and Wayne Smith each carded 78.

Harwood ends the year with a win

Harwood ends the year with a win

Mike HarwoodMICHAEL HARWOOD has ended the season on a high note by taking out the 2010 Australian Legends Tour Championship in a rain drenched Byron Bay.

Harwood took the first prize of $6300 after finishing with a four-under 140 over 36-holes.

Runner up on one under was Byron Bay professional Mark Wilson, with Legends Tour heavyweights Mike Ferguson and Rodger Davis tied for third.

Persistent rain forced the cancellation of the third round and tournament officials were forced to use round two results in order to declare Harwood the winner.

For 51-year-old Harwood, it was the culmination of a successful two-year comeback to professional golf.

“I had 15 years away from the game but decided to get back into it last year when I turned 50,” Harwood said.

“To have the opportunity to play in tournaments like this again is fantastic. There is good competition out there and I have really appreciated the chance to play again.”

Harwood said the weather had been a big factor at Byron Bay.

He was happy with the fact that he made the most of his limited opportunities on the course.

“I shot six birdies over the two days,” he said.

“You had to make the most of any birdie or par opportunity. I putted well and got a good lead.”

Harwood will be back on the European Senior Tour again from March next year.

Wilson was thrilled to finish second in the elite field.

“I’m very happy, I played about as well as I could,” Wilson said.

“The conditions were tough, it was very humid. Balls were skidding all over the place; it made club selection very important.”

The tournament will be played at Byron again next December.

Wilson said the plan was to make the three-day tournament a qualifying event for the PGA Legends Tour.

Harwood is Rookie of the Year at 50

Harwood is Rookie of the Year at 50

Mike HarwoodMIKE HARWOOD has captured his maiden European Senior Tour title in the OKI Castellon Senior Tour Championship in Spain, securing the tour’s Rookie of the Year title and marking a magnificent return to top golf.

Harwood carded a superb final round six under par 66 in windy conditions at Club de Campo del Mediterráneo on Sunday to finish three strokes clear of overnight leader Angel Franco and add the season ending Championship to the Volvo Masters he won on The European Tour in 1990 – becoming the first player to win both titles.

It capped a memorable fortnight for the 50 year old, who won the Australian Senior Open two weeks ago and rounded off a seamless return to competitive golf in 2009 after more than a decade out of the game.

“It was an amazing day, emotional too,” said Harwood. “When the wind was as bad as it was this morning I just didn’t want to make an idiot of myself.

“It’s been a great week. I had a few lucky breaks and I’ve made a lot of putts this week. I came in thinking this could be my week but I played well and putted so well.

“I hoped I would win this year but thought it might be unrealistic after so long out of the game. There must be something about Spain and the wind because my Volvo Masters win came in exactly the same conditions.”

Harwood had started the day two strokes behind Franco at Club de Campo del Mediterráneo but five birdies on his front nine saw him move into a share of the lead.

“My short game today was unbelievable on the front nine,” said Harwood. “I played pretty well on the back nine – I didn’t hit the ball that great but my short game was electric.”

Harwood won about $103,000 in Spain which took his year’s tally to about $210,000 allowing him to slip past the Rookie title leader and fellow Aussie Peter Senior, who won about $150,000 for the year, but did not play in Spain.

Harwood takes the candy in classic finish

Harwood takes the candy in classic finish

Australian Senior Open winner Michael HarwoodVICTORIAN Michael Harwood has capped off his return this year to tour golf with a thrilling win in the $300,000 Handa Australian Senior Open at Royal Perth Golf Club.

Harwood beat overnight leader and tournament favourite Peter Senior and fellow Victorian Michael Clayton in a sudden death play-off to take a title that is the richest in Australian senior golf.

“It’s fantastic to be here and win such an exciting title,” Harwood said.
“After 10 years of selling chocolates and candy in the Pro Shop I didn’t think I’d be back here.”

Harwood was referring to his decade long absence from top professional golf before turning 50 earlier this year and joining the European Seniors Tour.

“This is the best year of my life going back playing and practicing hard again. It’s been difficult sleeping in different beds week in and week out and it’s been tough on my wife Donna to be spending so much time apart again but we’ll get there in the end,” he said.

Harwood was Runner-up in the 1991 British Open, two shots behind Ian Baker-Finch at Royal Birkdale. His best year on the European Tour came in 1990 when won both the Volvo Masters and the PGA Championship. He also ended Greg Norman’s sequence of six victories in the Australian PGA when he won in 1986.

Harwood expressed condolences to fellow Senior Tour rookie Peter Senior, who came unstuck on the back nine.

Senior was making his playing debut in Australia as a “Legend” and Harwood said beating him made the victory sweeter.

“It’s great to win an Aussie Senior Open title, but even better to beat Peter Senior cause he is an unbelievable player. I’m so pleased to beat a champion like you Pete!”

Heading in to the final round, Senior ( 69, 68, 73) led by four shots and quickly extended that to five over playing partners Clayton (71, 70, 69) and Harwood (71, 70, 69) heading into the back nine.

An unfortunate bogey at 11 saw Senior’s round begin to falter and a double bogey at 14 followed by another dropped shot on 15 had the trio all tied on five-under with three holes to play.

After a terrific approach into 16, Senior made birdie to again take the outright lead.

After an errant drive on the last hole, Senior could only manage par and watch as both Harwood and Clayton rolled in birdies to force the championship into a sudden death play-off.

Having found the green safely in regulation on the first play-off hole, both Senior and Clayton narrowly missed their birdie chances.

Harwood calmly drained a six foot birdie putt for the championship and secured the National Senior Open title.

Harwood said he was excited about the growing Australian Legends Tour and looked forward to playing as many Pro-Ams and events as possible next year.

Defending champion Wayne Grady closed with a 72 for a three-round total of one-under (72, 71, 72) but it was New Zealander Garth Domigan who produced the shot of the day with an ace on the par 3 tenth hole.
