SPANISH veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez leads the 2013 KLM Open with Australia’s Robert Allenby just a stroke behind.

At 49 Jimenez is the oldest player in the field and is hoping to win what is the Dutch national title for the second time in almost 20 years.

Jimenez was the 1994 champion and would love to add another Spanish name to the trophy.

“Seve’s first win on the European Tour was here in 1976, and Jose Maria (Olazabal) also won here in 1989,” he said. “So hopefully I can win here, too. That would be fantastic.”

Jimenez took advantage of the relatively good conditions at the  Kennemer Golf and Country Club on the Dutch North Sea coast.

He had eight birdies and two bogeys in his six under 64 in the first round.

Allenby was one of six golfers tied for second on 5-under, while fellow Aussie Marcus Fraser was also on the top ten on 3-under.

Allenby has had a less than stellar year in his usual US PGA Tour haunt with just 5 cuts made from 24 events but he did finish T10 at the St Jude Classic in June.
