Allenby overtakes Ogilvy as Australia’s top ranked golfer

Robert AllenbyROBERT ALLENBY has overtaken Geoff Ogilvy to become Australia’s top-ranked male golfer following his near miss at the Players Championship on the weekend.

Allenby rises to 12th place after his oh so close second placing to South African Tim Clark at TPC Sawgrass.

Allenby was just one stroke behind Clark and with his attempted birdie putt on the 17th was just millimetres away from forcing a play off to end his 223 tournament victory drought on the US PGA Tour.

Whilst Allenby dropped from 16 last week to 12 – the lowest ranking in his career - Ogilvy slipped from 14 to 15. Tim Clark leapt from 40th to 20th

The other Australians in the world top 50 are Adam Scott at 43 and Michael Sim at 48.

Although Phil Mickelson couldn’t get the win he needed to oust Tiger Woods at the top of the rankings he did further narrow the margin between them.

Mickelson is on  9.67, just 1.31 points behind Woods. With Woods out indefinitely with a neck injury Crazy Phil has never had a better opportunity to take the number one spot.

The latest top-10 positions in the world golf rankings are:

1 Tiger Woods 10.98

2 Phil Mickelson 9.67

3 Steve Stricker 7.82

4 Lee Westwood 7.66

5 Jim Furyk 7.02

6 Ian Poulter 6.10

7 Ernie Els 5.85

8 Paul Casey 5.78

9 Rory McIlroy 5.35

10 Anthony Kim 5.14
