PETER FOWLER heads the contingent of eight Aussie golfers lining up for the 2012 Scottish Senior Open at Fairmont St. Andrews in Fife Scotland this week.
Fowler is currently sixth on the European Senior Tour Order of Merit and has shown some great form this year, particularly his sixth placing at the Senior British Open last month.
The other Aussies in the field for what is the 20th running of the Scottish Senior Open include Mike Harwood, David Merriman, Rodger Davis, Noel Ratcliffe, Tim Elliott, Graham Banister and Terry Price.
Favourite for the £250,000 tournament has to be England’s Barry Lane who has high hopes of winning this event for the third year in succession.
The former Ryder Cup player won for the second time last year after a nerveless final round which reached a spectacular climax when he eagled the 18th to finish two shots clear of Gary Koch.
“I love links golf and I love playing in Scotland,” said Lane this week. “Obviously it suits my game. I was very happy with the way I played in The Senior Open Championship so I’m looking forward to going back to Fairmont St Andrews. I can’t wait.”
Leading the strong Scottish charge is former Ryder Cup Captain Sam Torrance who helped design the course and won the event in 2006. England’s Ian Woosnam is another strong contender.
